Westbury is another lovely small town in mid north western Tasmania just 30 km from home with about 2,000 people.
My husband's paternal grandmother was born in Westbury 1898. B has a cousin living in Westbury with her husband was his mother's side of the family - yes mixed up :) Wednesday we visited them for the afternoon, always good to catch up with a relation and friends. Cousin married our best friend of 50 odd years and she met him first at our house :) He married her later in his life.
Another cousin on my husbands mother's side of the family owns the local Take a Way Shop, his father once was the Mayor of Westbury.
A new prison is to be build not too far from Westbury and a lot of locals are not happy about it, the others think it's a good idea.
A lot of Irish settlers settled in Westbury in the 1800's both free and convicts given their pardon.
Each year on St. Patrick's day Westbury has celebrations on the Village Green.
There are several Churches in Westbury and I took a photo of one of them which is opposite the Village Green. The Hotel is the first photo followed by the Church and another which is now a home but still looks like a Church. A home on the corner then the RSL Club building (Returned Serviceman League) but of course the building was something else prior to the RSL obtaining the building.
Beautiful photos. The first is a quintessential Australian country hotel - and I think that style of building has a LOT more charm than more modern architecture. The country hotels always look more inviting to me...
ReplyDeleteYes EC a typical Australian Country Hotel, rather lovely inside, well it was a few years back. They are a homely place :)
DeleteEs pequeña, pero las edificaciones que hay en ellas se ven de muy buen gusto.
ReplyDeleteAl estar tan cerca de distancia, te será bastante familiar.
Besos
Yes they are small but then the population was small and still is, so no need for a big Church.
DeleteLooks like a nice place to visit and you have connections to the town which is nice.
ReplyDeleteOften visit our friends and B's cousins house, we go for dinner they come in here also, we also go out for meals sometimes, not regular though.
DeleteWhat wonderful buildings in the small town. Prison might mean prisoner working parties maintaining and improving local infrastructure.
ReplyDeleteWell the prison commenced then it was discovered there was a big birds nest on the Crown Land which they are building on, so work stopped, not sure if they building has recommenced.
DeleteHappy you were able to get together with your husband’s cousin and friend. A lot of interesting history and the architecture of the house is beautiful, and the churches and other buildings, very interesting. Thanks for sharing them Margaret.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Denise.
DeleteSuch lovely photos
ReplyDeleteThanks Jo-Anne.
DeleteUn lugar pequeño con muy buenas constucciones. Se ve estupendo.
ReplyDeleteVisitar amigos ahora hace bien Margaret, por aquí seguimos sin poder hacerlo.
Buena noche. Cuídate.
Un abrazo.
Yes we are lucky we can visit friends and family.
DeleteSure hope you will be able to soon.
Take care Laura.
The building in your first picture looks very attractive!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice come to a place where you can meet relatives and /or friends.
It is good to visit Duta, and it's not very far away either, only a stones throw.
DeleteThanks for the tour of Westbury and its interesting history. Love the old buildings.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Diane, it's a lovely little town and there is even a new IGA.
DeleteThe Westbury town looks amazing and superb regards!
ReplyDeleteNice clean town.
DeleteThe hotel architecture looked interesting but it seemed rather desolate and I wondered if it is right in town. Living in a home that was once a church is very unique and I wondered if many people are curious about the interior.
ReplyDeleteHotels such as the one above are usually quiet during the day with a few people at night due to drinking laws these days :)
DeleteSign of the times.
Have never seen inside a church that has been made into a house but have seen photos on the internet and they are interesting.
This looks like an interesting town with beautiful buildings for hotel and church buildings.
ReplyDeleteYes, Nancy nice towns.
DeleteAn interesting and peaceful town.
ReplyDeleteI especially loved the building that was Church (3rd photo) is so beautiful.
Take care and all the best
Yes, it is a nice little church it also could have been a Hall for the Church..
DeleteThanks.
Excelentes las fotografias y lo que nos cuentas, cuidate mucho amiga, saludos.
ReplyDeleteThank you..
DeleteInteresting collections of buildings - nothing better than the verandahs
ReplyDeleteon country hotels.
The R.S.L club seems to be flagless????????? Strange indeed if so.
Cheers
Colin
RSL there is usually flagless and who knows maybe the building is not used much these days. Probably not enough returned soldiers live there these days Colin. They do have a Service and it's on ANZAC Day.
DeleteThe buildings are handsome, and I like hearing about small town history, and your family connections make it fascinating.
ReplyDeleteBella serie de imagenes, con unos edificio igualmente bellos en su aparente sencillez
ReplyDelete1898 Threw My Mind For A Loop - Like WoW - Anyway, Such Cool Old Buildings
ReplyDeleteCheers
