A Shark Killed a Man in Broome, WA

Tragic news from Broome in Western Australia (WA) where a shark attacked and killed a man off Cable Beach where the man was body surfing.  His body was recovered. This happened a few days ago.  The last time a shark killed a man was back in 1993.  The beach has been closed for the time being.

My photos of Cable Beach when we were there 5 years ago.  It's a small town with this beautiful beach where people come to watch the sunsets, have picnics on the sand mainly for their evening meal.  The town is isolated as there are no large towns or cities near it.

I have included a map. Broome is about 6,000km from home here in Launceston, Tasmania.  There of course is a shorter route by vehicle but for a part of it is just a track.

  1. I have watched the movie "Jaws" many years ago and it was scary. The beach is beautiful. The sky shots are beautiful too.

    1. Goodness, you heard about the shark and the man, amazing - but then once in while we do hear news from your country too :)
Usually there is not a cloud in the sky in winter at Broome but that evening there was and it makes a lovely photo with the sun setting and clouds.

Yes, know a little about those killer whales, we all have something within the sea that is not so good at times.

Your photos show what a beautiful area it is. I hope other swimmers and surfers soon return.

    1. So sad.
It was a big shark too...If no sightings of a shark or sharks the beach will eventually open.

  6. I read that story on the news. It is sad but why do people still swim knowing there could be sharks nearby. Maybe they are not concerned. Feel sorry for his friends ad family. It is a beautiful beach to visit though. Have a great day!

    1. That's a good question Bill, 'why do people still swim'.
I suppose they think a shark will not get 'me'. Surfers and swimmers most of them look out for sharks and sea creatures but sometimes they are missed by them, maybe they think if they see one they can get back to shore in time.
It's the thing here in Australia, we learn to live with the sharks in the sea as we know they are there, if no sightings people go into the water. Some places have shark nets in the sea so people can swim.
      Take care.

  7. What a shocking thing to happen to anyone, his family must be devastated. I understand that some of the worse human killers are the Great White Sharks, which live in your waters,

It's horrible. From the pictures, it’s hard to believe that tragedy. The beach is beautiful.

  11. That is sad. Such a beautiful beach, and that sunset — wow! We have a few shark bites every summer on our beach here in South Carolina but mostly by smaller sharks and the damage is not serious.

    1. Well thank goodness for that, your sharks are not too bad, so different from the sharks we have on our coast.
Had no idea if sharks were a problem in other areas of the world, never hear anything of them.

  14. One place in Australia that I would love to have visited. I'm told it is magical and the resorts are World class - plus of course expensive. The Cable Beach Club resort is really quite something.
I have seen Broome on a couple of Singapore or Bangkok flights from 35,000 feet.
Not that you can see much!!!
Certainly is quite a long beach to patrol so you should ONLY swim between the flags.
Shark attacks on the Australian coastline are at an all time record this year.
I'm (tongue in cheek) wondering when some clairvoyant pee-brain will associate these attacks with Covid 19 - ha ha!
The tidal situation I believe is amazing to witness along most of the northern WA coastline.
Did you have a ride on the camels along the beach?
Great photos of an amazing part of "The Land Down Under".

    1. Broome is isolated as you know, one industry is pearls, then a few farms.
Not a lot to do there, you make your own fun, to watch the sunset is magic because it's beautiful there.
You can walk out into the water if you are game enough for a long way before it's deep...
      Thanks re photos.
