The Race Horse.

The most famous resident of Goondiwindi was Gunsynd, a Thoroughbred race horse known as 'The Goondiwindi Grey. In the late 1960's and early 1970's, Gunsynd had 29 wins, came third in the 1972 Melbourne Cup.
The statue of the Jockey and Gunsynd are down near the Bridge which is the border between Queensland and New South Wales (NSW).

  1. I love stories of race horses and how they are honored. When I was a child I cheered for the horse Native Dancer, who ran in the Kentucky Derby. I grew up reading the Black Stallion books and the Misty of Chincoteague books. Did you read them?

    1. Unfortunately I've never read the series of books, I was probably doing ballet and other types of dancing at that time, plus piano and school homework and never got around to reading them.
      Horses are beautiful graceful creatures.

    1. Lovely statue. Many country towns in Australia don't have things to brag about and when they do, they do it well :)

  15. On the day of Gunsynd's final bow...at Brisbane's Doomben Racecourse...it was an honour lap to celebrate the champion's racing life..not a race...I got to pat him on the nose and chat with him. Upon having the film in my camera developed, I discovered the man standing in the photo with me...with whom I'd had a rather lengthy, amicable chat...was none other than T. J. Smith...father of well-known trainer, Gai Waterhouse!

    1. Well fancy that, you never know who you will see in a photo.
That was nice to have a chat with Gunsynd, something I'm sure many would have loved to have done.
