Ayr is in the tropic on the eastern side of Australia and we had to go this far north to get warm in winter last year.
Ayr has a population of about 8,738 people and is the centre of the sugarcane-growing area.
The Post Office below was opened in 1883.
A place to sit in the shade and have a picnic in the main street in Ayr.
The town clock in the middle of a round a bout and below the shopping area and main street.
There is shelter in the middle of the road for cars and people. I chose to take the photos on a Sunday because there wasn't anyone about.
Scottish immigrants seem to have left their mark. There is an Ayr here too, close to where I live.
ReplyDeleteOh is there an Ayr too - yes they certainly leave their mark in Ayr.
DeleteSo nice that you can travel from place to place on your vacation. I like the clock tower.
ReplyDeleteIt different the clock, several town have a clock similar in the middle of a round a bout.
DeleteAnother place worth visiting.
ReplyDeleteThat's for sure - has a homely feel to it does Ayr.
DeleteAl ser domingo, las tiendas comerciales seguramente están cerradas...es el día de descanso, de ahí que no se vea a nadie en la calle.
ReplyDeleteBesos
Most shops are closed in Ayr on a Sunday, just a few open.
DeleteLove the old post office - and clock.
ReplyDeleteBoth are looking good and well looked after. I went inside the Post Office to buy and stamp and post a letter, lovely friendly and helpful man served me.
DeleteI just love that clock …
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
It is a nice one Jan.
DeleteIt is a nice looking town. Great that picnic tables and seats are provided. It is a fine clock, that maybe we have seen before?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I've posted the clock in Ayr several years back, but the clock is similar to others in towns.
DeleteThere are several picnic tables in that area, but then the Court House if near.
That is an old post office.
ReplyDeleteIt is Adam, seems Post Office and several public buildings were built first.
DeleteIf Ayr was settled by Scots then I hope they left their warm kilts back in bonnie
ReplyDeleteScotland - ha ha.
It is a lovely progressive town but the cyclones would make me think twice about
moving there.
Great report
Colin
For the record on Ayr, Qld.
DeleteNamed after this rather pompous bloke who was born in Ayr, Scotland.
"Sir Thomas McIlwraith KCMG (17 May 1835 – 17 July 1900) was for many years the dominant figure of colonial politics in Queensland. He was Premier of Queensland from 1879 to 1883, again in 1888, and for a third time in 1893. In common with most politicians of his era, McIlwraith was an influential businessman, who combined his parliamentary career with a prosperous involvement in the pastoral industry".
McIlwraith died in London and is buried in AYR, Scotland.
Colin
Thanks for the information Colin.
DeleteI believe kilts were worn in Ayr way back - thought it would have been a bit warm.
Ayr has a similar ambience to Bowen. There must be something in the tropical air!
ReplyDeleteThe lay back town, not hustle and bustle like many cities.
Delete(saying it again) I really enjoy the architecture there.
ReplyDeleteOur verandahs over the footpaths keeps us cool in the summer and the torrential rains in the rainy season.
DeleteThe buildings are always lovely to see in different countries.
Me gusta esa torre del reloj.
ReplyDeleteGracias Margaret. El problema que tenía con los comentarios como vino se fue. Espero que no vuelva.
Buen fin de semana.
Un abrazo.
Happy to see you can comment once again - that google let's you.
DeleteClocks like that are often in the middle of the road in many towns..it's different.
Really nice place to visit! Have a lovely weekend ☺
ReplyDeleteThanks Natalia.
