Manilla, Barraba NSW

Manilla NSW is not far north of Tamworth.  Last year we called into Manilla and did the same this year.
The old Bank which is not used as a bank anymore. The clock is gone!
About 2,550 people live in Manilla so it's said and it's a good place for hang gliding and paragliding along with ultra light aircraft.  There are a few big hills or mountains nearby.
There is a river called Manilla River but we didn't see it, I believe it will flood if enough rain.
The old rail bridges are Heritage listed.

On the way to Barraba NSW it's very obvious there is a drought.

The lady came to feed her animal she had fodder in a blue bag.

  1. When you see how dry and parched it is, it is easy to see how the fires quickly spread once they have started.

    1. That's true and especially if children light them which has been the case in some areas. Some places and areas just have no grass at all, just dust.

  3. I suspect it is even drier and more parched now. And have it in my head that they have had fires. I hope not. How I hope not.

    1. I'm sure it would be much drier now, a lot of places just had dust.
Didn't see anywhere where there were fires there.

  4. Very dry landscape, hopefully the rain will come. I like the former bank building, it looks to be in great shape.

    1. The old bank building is not too bad for it's age, it will need sprucing up in a year or too, think it's being used as a Dr.'s surgery for now.

  7. Photos taken a couple of months before you putting up your report.
It would look a lot bloody worse now.
I think recently some rain fell but nowhere near enough.

It certainly USED to flood in the Manilla area. Hard to reconcile the above photos
to what I recall in the 1950/60's.
And still some useless politicans don't believe in climatic changes - just go ask an old farmer for the reality !!!

    1. Be just dust now Colin, was nearly dust in some places there when we were there.
Hard to imagine floods at Manilla or any other places.

    2. Well here is the 1964 report on flooding in this area.

Compare the photos of this and reports of years before with what you have shown.
I know - as a kid - being stuck in these areas when it flooded.
And remember - the roads were mostly DIRT!! You didn't move - bogged - Oh such fun, I think not - ha ha,
