Further North in Far North Queensland. Australia.

On a misty rainy day we headed north for a drive to Port Douglas.

Port Douglas is a town on the Coral Sea in the tropical far north of Queensland, Australia. It's known for its beach resorts and as one of the bases for visits to both the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest reef system, and Daintree National Park, home to biodiverse rainforest.

The town's population can often double, however, with the influx of tourists during the peak tourism season May–September. (Winter)

In November 1996 United States President Bill Clinton and First Lady chose the town as their only holiday stop on their historic visit to Australia. When dining at a local restaurant they witnessed a couple's wedding certificate. On a return visit on 11 September 2001, the then ex-President was again dining at the Salsa Bar and Grill, a local restaurant, when he was advised of the 11 September attacks.

4 Mile Beach

A walkway to the lookout from the beach.

If you drive to the lookout this is the view of 4 mile beach.

This is one of the buildings at the bottom of the hill.

  1. Boa tarde, depois de apreciar as suas belas fotos que mostram na perfeição a beleza, não fico admirado por Bill Clinton ter escolhido passar e desfrutar do que é lindo.

  8. We were only there briefly and it is forever associated in my mind with the late Christopher Skase. It does look like a good place to stay and explore.

  9. I recall the Clinton's visits. I believe that Bill did away with the ever
present "security men with the walkie-talkie wrist watches" a la comic man,
    Dick Tracey.
They certainly just mingled like everyday tourists up there much to the consternation of their security people and why not?
That look-out area and the mansions up there are something out of this World.
Ah yes Port Douglas likes up to its name - "the home of the rich and the famous" and did you note the number of backpackers from all over the World who work up there in paradise in the hospitality industry on their 47A visas. What a paid holiday they have !!!!!!
I think President Bush Snr and his good lady wife also visited up there in his Presdidency years and then for a private holiday.
    Cheers

  12. It's so beautiful. I like the walkway to the lookout. I always get Port Douglas confused with a NSW Port that's also a holiday destination.

    1. Haven't visited the Great Barrier Reef. From what others have told us it's not the best near Cairns, more colour further south.

  22. An acquaintance of mine, Margaret Thorsborne - I originally met Margaret when I was managing the then resort on Hinchinbrook Island - (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Thorsborne) met Clinton during his 1996 visit. I was managing a motel in Cardwell at the time.

At the time Margaet lived in a cottage in the Edmund Kennedy Natural Park just north of Cardwell. Because of all her environmental work she and her late husband, Arthur, had done National Parks said she could live there until her death; and upon that sad time, it would revert to National Parks. Sadly, it was wiped out by Cyclone Yasi.
