The West side of the Tamar River in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. It's a muddy place when the tide is out. These shots were taken recently on one of our trips to buy some Strawberries from the farm.
The last two photos you can see the Windermere Church is the distance on the otherside (eastern side) of the river, a link to the church.

ReplyDeleteOh they are lovely, we have been twice but of course we can buy them at the supermarket too, but the ones from the farm as nicer at the moment Teresa.

ReplyDeleteNo Hels, all is good along the Tamar River, it's always been like that when tide is out.
DeleteThe scenery is very nice. Sometimes it can be very disappointing what is revealed when a tide goes out.
ReplyDeleteYou never know what you will see when the tide goes out, as you say it's disappointing. I remember Cairns, the sea comes to the city wall but when they tide is out, oh dear it's not good at all. Townsville is much better.
DeleteIt's a lovely area Margaret and your photos are great. We had a River Tamar near where I used to live in Devonshire (UK). I wonder if someone from Devon settled in your area way back.
ReplyDeleteOur Tamar River was named after the Tamar River in South West England by Colonel William Paterson in December 1804. The England Tamar River border between Devon and Cornwall and is called the River Tamar.
DeleteColonel William Paterson, FRS (17 August 1755 – 21 June 1810) was a Scottish soldier, explorer, Lieutenant Governor and botanist best known for leading early settlement at Port Dalrymple in Tasmania.

Absolutely fascinating Margaret. Thank you so much! I enjoyed reading this wonderful history. As I was reading your answer to Gregg, he told me that he used to drive his ship up and down the River Tamar. He was their navigator and was on an exchange tour with the Royal Navy for two years. They went in and out of Devonport, using the Tamar River. Long story short, we met at a cocktail party. I was part of the mayoral contingent whose job was to officially welcome them. This was in another port which was not too far from where I lived.
