I lived in the City of Burnie when small aged about 6 to 9 Years of age for 3 years. My late father being stationed there at the Police Station, he was a Policeman. I used to walk to school over a few paddocks and got caned nearly everyday for about 1 year for laughing :) Recall putting onions on the palm of my hands and rubbing them in so the cane didn't hurt as much. The cane didn't do any harm to me, all I do is laugh about it.
Now Burnie is a port city on the north west coast of Tasmania, Australia. When founded in 1827 it was named Emu Bay. In April 1988 Burnie was proclaimed a city by Queen Elizabeth 11.
These photos were taken from a hill over looking part of the city and Bass Strait.
Awesome post
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteIt sure looks like a beautiful place!
ReplyDeleteIt's a very hilly city Martha.
DeleteYet another beautiful place. I was never caned, though my brothers were. Repeatedly. I hadn't heard the onion trick before.
ReplyDeleteThat was how it was back then EC. Only at Burnie did I get caned.
DeleteBurnie looks so very beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely place to live, I know I enjoyed living there for about 3 years,
DeleteI don't like the idea of you being canned simply because you laughed a lot. But then again, I don't agree with hitting children at all.
ReplyDeleteHowever, Bernie does look a nice place in which to grow up.
Caning is not done these days Rosemary, and people often got caned when they shouldn't have done...I was told not to giggle along with several others but we always did, probably to see if we got caned, it obviously didn't deter us from laughing :) living in Burnie for about 3 years was enjoyable, it's where I began ballet and other dancing.
DeleteA very beautiful place and a stunning view of the water.
ReplyDeleteWhere we lived we had a gorgeous view of the sea.
DeleteAnother beautifull place
ReplyDeleteYes Jo-Anne.
DeleteIt's a great vantage point to take great photos. I've not heard of rubbing onions into your hands. I am not surprised you laughed a lot.
ReplyDeleteWell the caned never got it out of me for I still do a lot of laughing.
DeleteBeautiful view of the port and Bass Strait. I didn't know about the rubbing onions trick. Have a great week.

DeleteBeautiful Burnie! Thanks for the photos and good to know you still smile and laugh despite getting the cane! I never got it and our teachers usually caned the boys but not the girls, so good that it is not used these days.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Rosie. Cane was used a fair bit back in my day. I'm pleased it's not used these days too as I feel there are other way which they didn't use or even think of in the past..
DeleteПрекрасный город Берни! Потрясающий вид на залив. Это залив? Спасибо, что Вы рассказываете о Тасмании!
ReplyDeleteYou could say it's a bay by the shape of it.
DeleteLovely to have a virtual trip back to Australia with you! What a memory of your school days, one good thing for me about going to a convents school, I don't remember anyone ever getting caned!
