Criterion Hotel/Motel in Quay Street is a beautiful building which can be seen from the bridge across the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton. It's not an easy building to photograph because there are trees behind me then the river so one can't take a whole photo of it.
The Hotel was built in 1899 to 1890.
Rockhampton Post Office on East Street. Built from 1892 to 1896
The whole areas looks very stately and grand and The Giddy Goat seems not fit in!
ReplyDeleteThe Giddy Goat is in a different area, just up the road and around the corner.
DeleteI really like the colonial architecture of the hotel. So impressive.
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely.
DeleteLovely architecture.
ReplyDeleteIt is well maintained.
DeleteBeautifully captured!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bill, lucky I didn't fall or slip into the River :)
DeleteI don't mind the style of the building in the last photo. At least it sympathetic to the other most wonderful older buildings.
ReplyDeleteMost of the other buildings in Rockhampton are very different to those real old ones.
DeleteLooks so majestic.. beautiful clicks..
ReplyDeleteThanks

ReplyDeleteLove the Giddy Goat Bar.
Giddy Goat is different and I reckon has more fun :)
DeleteThe "Giddy Goat" appeals to me.
ReplyDeleteA few 4 XXXXX schooners and I would be quite at home.
Cheers
Colin
A lot of fun in there I expect.
DeleteA friend and I stayed at a hotel near The Criterion, for one night, on our way back to Brisbane from Mackay, where we'd attended my brother's wedding. The hotel we stayed at was then known as "The Commercial"...I think it is now known as "The Heritage Hotel"...and is on the same street as The Criterion...looking out upon the Fitzroy Rivwer.
ReplyDeleteTwo maiden sisters ran it at the time...I think they were also the owners of the hotel, or part of the family that owned it.
They both beautiful old buildings...fine reminders of days long gone.
Have placed a link to the Hotel I think you may have stayed at - did a post the other week on the Hotel. Good that you remember :)

DeleteIt was in 1967 - around April, from memory....that we stayed there.
That's ok re missing post - we can't catch all posts :)
DeleteWell 1967 was a fair while ago when all said and done.
Lovely buildings.
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely one.
DeleteSome of the buildings hae an almost Italian look to them espcially with that brilliant sunshine and blue skies.
ReplyDeleteMany Italians came to Australia as did Greeks long time ago.
DeleteNearly always a blue sky up that way in winter.
From your great photos, I know I'd enjoy visiting Rockhampton!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you would Christine.

Thanks. The buildings are not old compared to European Countries, well some.
DeleteNice looking! And the bar has an appealing and funny name
ReplyDeleteIt does have one and I expect it got it's name from one one being silly as a giddy goat! :)
