Mother nature is the painter of this beautiful desert landscape in the State of South Australia. It is 120 klms north-east of Coober Pedy, in the Arckaringa Station pastoral lease, not far from the homestead. It is notable for its distinctive mesas, mountains, and geological formations.
The Painted Desert was seabed 80 million years ago. As the land rose, some of the rock has eroded away, leaving the Arckaringa Hills in many shades of orange, yellow, and white shale on the slopes.
We have been to The Painted Desert a few times. It only seems like last year we were there the second time around however it's been 10 years! These photos were taken then.
Awesome colors!
ReplyDeleteSo true Anne.
DeleteI wonder if it's kind of a spiritual place for Aboriginal people?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there would be some area there that is spiritual to the Aboriginals.
DeleteThey are simply amazing!
ReplyDeleteThat's so true Angie, beautiful colours.
DeleteBeautiful colours and an amazing sight.
ReplyDeleteVery different Bill.
DeleteMargaret, nature presents us with beautiful spectacles that sometimes we do not know or do not see for different reasons.
ReplyDeleteThat is so true Norma. Some people have visited that area and didn't see as much beauty as I did.
DeleteLooks like it wouldn't be out of place in Egypt!
ReplyDeleteThe cattle stations there are huge - just observe the vegetation.
It would now require mustering by motor bikes and helicopters - EXPENSIVE!
Still we are a hardy breed here in the Land of OZ!
Very interesting blog and photo report.
Cheers
Colin
PS: The weather here is fine and sunny but not much heat in the sun at 10.00am.
Now off to the pub for libations and some luck?????????
I was reading about one of the cattle stations the other day Colin, very interesting.
DeleteThank you.
Cool change here today but nice and sunny, warming up again tomorrow.
Hope you enjoyed your time at the pub!
It poured rain - I got drenched - I borrowed the biggest umbrella from the
Deletestaff - it is the size of a large beach umbrella - taking it back on Monday.
Also the damn poker machine took a great disliking to my endeavours.
All in all - bad and then to cap it off a bad day - a chair and my right foot big toe collided and the chair won.
Today more rain - it sure will dampen the big race meeting in Sydney - Golden Slipper day.
Cheers
Grumpy Colin
Coober Pedy is on my list to drone for that vast landscape and fabulous colours
ReplyDeleteWhen you do, enjoy and there is also the Breakaways they are good too.
DeleteGorgeous views. So different from what I am used to. ; )
ReplyDeleteJust in and around that area for some klms are those colours, beautiful.
DeleteEs muy bonito. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteIt looks like a beautiful area, the sunrises and sunsets must be amazing.
ReplyDeleteI am sure they would be R, with all those colours and more coming out.
DeleteI see Oodnadatta on the map. I've always had a thought to visiting the place with such a strange name.
ReplyDeleteI can see why it is called The Painted Desert.
Someone else mentioned commenting issues, so I doubt you are alone.
Never been to Oodnadatta Andrew. The glitch is no more at the moment, hope it keeps that way.
DeleteWhat a beautiful landscape! I would have never thought of such a colourful desert.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing isn't it!
DeleteWhat beautiful mountains.
ReplyDeleteThe Netherlands is a flat country, so no mountains to be seen.
Greetings Irma
They are lovely Irma. A lot of Australia is very flat and it's good to come across hills occasionally.
DeleteWow--- Wonderful shots of such an incredible landscape!
ReplyDeleteThank you Bill.
Deleteawesome shots dear Margaret !!!
ReplyDeletewhat an intriguing formation of landscape ,the rock in last pic particularly looks incredibly beautiful and interesting
place looks calm
thanks for sharing it with us
hugs
You are welcome, Baili...very peaceful there not one person in sight.
DeleteWhere does the water come from, for humans and animals, but also for trees?
ReplyDeleteThere are no trees there Hels, on the edge of the desert where we were, so it's just the rainwater. The trees adapt to the conditions. There are places that have bore water as on the Stations but many places don't have access to that water. There would a billabong or two I guess. The wildlife has adapted themselves to these conditions and you don't see any wildlife, well we didn't on our visits.
DeleteIt is spectacular as its name suggests, it makes you want to paint and reflect that beauty.
ReplyDeleteBest regards.
If I could paint I would paint it..
DeleteGod's pallet is awesome!
ReplyDeletehugs
Donna
It sure is Donna.
DeleteMust be an absolutely beautiful place to visit and I am sure it leaves deep memories.

ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend. Orvokki
It is a very big continent as you say, and the variety of landscape changes so much. Thank you and you too.
DeleteWhat bloody nice photos, I would love to travel to that area and see things first hand
ReplyDeleteIf you ever get the chance, go Jo-Anne. It's an amazing area and different again when treading on the soil/sand at the edge of a desert.
DeleteThe colours are amazing aren't they.
ReplyDeleteAustralia/Tasmania are just so big ... I do appreciate it when you share a map.
Have a good weekend.

ReplyDeleteYou are welcome, and thank you..
DeleteHello, Cathy....I'm just now catching up with Blogger...the reason below for my slackness.....
ReplyDeleteCyclone Alfred poked his nosey nose in, uninvited and unwelcome, causing much mayhem in the area…in South-East Queensland and its surrounds. Here on the hill in the Gold Coast Hinterland where I live, we lost power. I was without power for a week…some others for longer. We had no water (we’re not on town water supply here…we’re reliant on rainwater tanks, and the electric pumps that dispense said water); we’re septic, not sewerage, so no flushing toilets; contents of fridge and freezer had to be tossed out. Our local supermarket couldn’t open for a week because their generator wouldn’t work. I felt so sorry for them because they had to toss out so much food…so much.
Things are getting back on track, but the crews are still working hard, clearing away the debris caused by Alfie’s fury.
Take good care. :)
Goodness me Lee that wasn't too good then. Awful when you lose food or anything for that matter. Loo problems as well as water isn't good either.
DeleteWe used to regularly run out of water on the farm and electricity both for weeks on end way back but no great winds like you had, very different.
Pleased all is recovering, takes time.
Take care and thanks for telling me about Alfie.
Bellas imagenes de ese paisaje desertico
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI've never seen beautiful layers like this hill.
ReplyDeleteOh my!!What a beautiful warm landscape😍You live in such a beauty..I am amazed
ReplyDeleteAre there kengooruus there?😀
Incredible place Margaret! The area reminds me of The Painted Desert in Arizona. Thoroughly enjoyed your photos as I did the maps and always appreciate you adding those. Thank you for another lovely post!
ReplyDeleteSe ve precioso, es un paisaje que me gusta. Muchos besos Margaret.
ReplyDeleteThe Painted Desert is such an amazing place! Hard to believe it was once a seabed. The colors of the hills are just stunning. Crazy how time flies—10 years feels like yesterday! Bet those photos bring back great memories.
