We used to

We used to have a big fishpond in our backyard years ago with gold fish and many, it seemed those that we knew who tired of their fish put them in our pond.  Eventually after many years the fish just disappeared, they grew to be a good size.  Don't really have a decent photo of it as it was in the beginning of digital photography.
I do have this waterlily though and the pond at the time was well covered with these lilies.

The second photo is of a Bottle Brush which is called a 'Callistemon in the family of Myrtaceae. The entire genus is endemic to Australia but widely cultivated in many other regions and naturalized in scattered locations'...Wikipedia.
This particular Callistemon is growing in the nature strip next door, the council planted it several years ago, it's now in flower.

    1. They are lovely to have these fish ponds, if you do make sure it's water tight.

  2. I have a very large Callistemon growing in our garden which is about 25 years old. When I purchased it people told me that it would not survive our winters, but it has proved them to be wrong.

    1. Well there you are Rosemary, it can be grown in your area, they will stand a bit of frost down here in the winter so therefore they bloom in your area.

  3. We had a fishpond when I was growing up. Sadly the cats used to catch the fish and put them on the front door mat as presents for us. They left the water lilies alone to bloom.
And thanks for the reminder - I have been meaning to go and see whether our bottle brush is in flower yet. I hope so.

    1. Pretty things bottle brushes.
Oh my, your cats had to show you all what they had caught - our cat used to bring home baby rabbits to the back door, that was when bush was beside us and behind us, now all gone with houses taking their place.

    1. Good. It seems to stand out more, also had a white lily but couldn't find a photo of it, maybe one day I will.

  5. The pond looks pretty. Cranes used to come and take fish from a friends' fish pond. They had to put chicken wire over the top to stop them. The wire on a frame was removed when they had visitors.

    1. Oh gosh, yes, birds will take the fish a lot of work for your friends removing the wire all the time. I remember having large birds sitting on the clothesline at one time watching the fish, in the early days though.

    1. Thank you. Pity the fish have gone but the pond itself is a lot of work, so it turned out alright in the end.

  12. I remember bottlebrush very well. It was always a great favourite of the honeyeaters it seemed to me, especially wattlebirds.
