Crows Nest, Queensland.

We moved onto Crows Nest further north for a few nights.  We stayed there last year.

A statue of Jimmy Crow, an Aboriginal who lived in the area and gave the town its name is believed to have lived in a hollow tree.
The statue weights over a ton, and was cut from a block of Helidon freestone.
Jimmy Crow was an exceptional tracker and traditional man.

A small restaurant at the Caravan Park which is rather popular.

The water in the pond was as below in 2018. 2019 as above and of course a drought.

There are a few shops in Crows Nest which is not that far from Toowoomba to the east. There is also a small supermarket.

The Post Office and the Catholic Church.

  1. Rain is badly needed there.
Do you ever pass by or stay in big, cosmopolitan cities?

    1. It is Catarina.
Have been to the big cities few years back.
Have been to Sydney about 3 times but not with caravan on just in car. Drove Through the tunnel and over the bridge. Been to Adelaide SA but not into the city centre, Perth Western Australia a few back but not into the city centre, Canberra ACT been there 3 times stayed in Motels, Brisbane Q'Land most years, sometimes into city centre just driving and usually get lost:) Darwin ACT about 3 or 4 times, been to city centre most times.
Melbourne every years but not into the city centre as we have the caravan on. Have been to the city centre and surrounds many times when I flew there for business some years ago.

    2. It must be difficult (or not practical) to drive a caravan in big cities. When I go to British Columbia, to the small city where my daughter lives with her family, I see many caravans parked in driveways. I don't see that in Toronto, of course. That is something I would like to do (but I know it will not happen) ... travel across Canada in a caravan/motorhome. : )

    3. Not many people take their caravans through the bigger cities due to heavy traffic when there are alternative not so busy routes to take.
You never know, one day you may travel across Canada..

  2. Looks like that pond contains barely more than a bathtub of water.

  3. I wonder how it was to live in a tree. In the United States there is also a Jim Crow with an unfortunate history.
"Throughout the 1830s and '40s, the white entertainer Thomas Dartmouth Rice (1808-1860) performed a popular song-and-dance act supposedly modeled after a slave. He named the character Jim Crow."
He dressed in blackface: "the makeup used by a non-black performer playing a black role."

    1. That interesting information you have given me John, thank you for that. I just remember the black and white minsteral show from Britain from 1958 for 20 years!
Well years back prisoners up north in the tropics we put in a hollow tree overnight and of course they were chained.

    1. Probably just a puddle now, and a dirty one at that but it's water, more than some people have.
Thanks - a lot to see in most country towns and they are the salt of our earth :)

  8. It is great to see an indigenous person recognised. I dare say he was used by early settlers on many occasions.
I have been correlating the bushfire areas over Australia - far bigger area than the whole of the UK and also Belgium, Holland and Denmark combined........can you imagine these whole areas in flames????????
Tomorrow is supposed to be Armageddon like with the fires. I am dreading the outcome.
Great coverage as always Margaret - you do Australian landscapes and history an honour.

    1. The indigenous who helped white man way back were probably not recognised until recent times and I'm sure white man would not have survived very well in a lot of areas in Australia if it hadn't been for the indigenous people/person.
Goodness Colin, that is amazing how large the fires are when you have worked it out as you did, not good and it's only the beginning of summer.
Everything crossed for tomorrow and many prayers too.
      Thanks :)

    2. This morning I can't see the homes up on the hill behind where I live.
Could make 'a foggy day in London" as the saying/song goes look second rate.
You'd swear that the residents down here in Terrigal where not in Hong Kong with those protest masks on. Quite amusing if it wasn't so serious.

  10. Crows Nest looks like a great little town and your photos are great. I do like to walk around the small towns and discover nice shops and sculptures which would not be noticed by driving through.
