On the Way

Instead of a last years holiday post I decided to do one on the trip to the East Coast of Tasmania which we did last week and early this week.

We stayed put in the caravan park at Swansea (south of Bicheno) after staying in the driveway of my 2nd cousins house in Bicheno, Tasmania where we also stayed put for a few days.  His parents (my 1st cousin and his wife) are down from Coffs Harbour for an extended holiday and already visited with us in December last year. We spent all our time in 2nd cousins house only sleeping in the caravan van, a lot of talking that's for sure. 2nd cousin works on a Gas ship (Electrical Engineer) and was at sea with 8 weeks on the ship and 8 weeks off.

Avoca is about 81 km south east of Launceston, Tasmania and was first settled in the 1830's and now has the population of about 123 people.
It was officially settled in 1834 as a farming, coal and tin mining town, but only farming exists now.
There is a Pub, Shop, Church, Police Station and a Post Office.

Below is the St. Thomas Anglican Church which was completed in May 1842.
I made it black and white as you can see plus the clock is not correct, I expect it doesn't work anymore.

Lovely old trees in Avoca

An old house which is certainly worse for ware.

The Post Office, Pub above and below the shop which sells some sausage rolls made by our neighbour across the road!

  2. Even though we did not travel to this part of Tasmania, I am happy to see your pictures. I have nothing but the very fondest memories of my visit there. You must be glad right now to have a more temperate climate than the mainland.

27/30/35 deg C is rather nice here for summer.

    1. Beautiful are those trees and rather old I expect because of the size of them.

  5. Swansea is just so nice. The old house looks ok enough to be fixed up. I note the old oil heating tank at the side of the house. Didn't almost everyone have one of those.

    1. I don't know of a single one in South Australia. We had one when we lived on Puckapunyal Army base and soon found out how expensive the oil was.

    2. We used to have oil for heating, was cheap at the time then became expensive to most changed to wood and so on..
Last time we were in Avoca there were sheep in the grounds of that house.

  7. Trust that the Tasmanian fires are not too near you.
How I fear and detest bushfires - so scary and the costs so horrific.

    1. Your prayers were answered Colin.
The fires are no where near us thank goodness, mostly it's just bush burning in the path of several small towns. Thunder is forecast tomorrow late afternoon so let's hope more fires are not started.

  9. A little TLC and that worse-for-wear place could be quite lovely. I love the Post Office building which is so much more sturdy looking than today's modern blow-down-in-a-strong-wind places. Back then they built to last.

    1. I agree with you regarding that house.
There are a few strong places in Avoca and one is being renovated outside, so that was lovely to see that's it's cared for.

Hope you are well and keeping cool over your way :) certainly hot at over 46 deg C.
Lovely wisteria on that old house - we used to have it growing here at home over the archway years ago but we took it out, too evasive.

  11. What a nice place to visit. I really like the post office. Oh yes--- you can think of it being a nice, fuzzy cat in the wall.... No wolves allowed.
