Manferns

Many people especially those from Mainland Australia won't go down the Elephant Pass, Tasmania due to it being windy - well we will go up and down it and have done so many times.  The windy part is a mere 10 klm long.

Three photos of man-ferns towards the east coast of Tasmania growing along the side of the road.

Kangaroo Paw above. There are several different colours to be purchased, these plants lie dormant over winter. Photo from 2nd cousins house at Bicheno.

The old store at Swansea which is over a hundred years old and still in the same family.
I bought the tea towel (below) from there.

    1. Some ferns do need the humidity, the ones in the photo wouldn't get humidity on a mountain here in Tasmania. There are several varieties of man ferns.

  2. I noticed some face cream from Clarins which was made from the Kangaroo Paw flowers, so I was interested to see this on your post.

    1. Oh really, I didn't know that. The flowers are very tiny when they come out, and on some of the 'paws' there was a flower.

    1. They are beautiful and healthy those ferns. If I'm needing tea-towels I often buy one for the caravan.

  4. when you look closely past the magnificent ferns, the ground is not very green!
Obviously some rain is badly needed, as the bushfires in Tasmania news reports
    suggest.
Way back in the 1950's the Dorrigo Pass up Armidale, NSW way was avoided as much as possible, as was Cunningham's Pass up near Toowoomba, Qld.
Both were one way goat tracks!!!

    1. I can imagine that they were having been up and down those passes several times over the years.
No bush fires anywhere near me as they are in the Highlands and a part of the West Zeehan, Rosebury, inland Miena, area. Many areas one can't get to so the fires just have to burn.

  5. We have a yellow caution sign on our front door that warns of Tasmanian Devils ahead. It has a depiction of a real devil, not the Warner Brothers one. I have no idea where we got it. Great post, by the way.

    1. Thanks.
There is a lot of difference between the real devil and the Warner Brothers one as you know.

  8. I remember the Swansea general store. Good to hear it is still a thriving business. I don't know about man ferns. Just another think to check out in the future.

    1. The old store is doing alright as it's also an IGA, interesting to walk through the other part where they sell all kinds of things.

  10. I must admit I'm not a fan of windy roads... lucky I live in wide open flat country where all the roads are straight! But sometimes to get to the best places you have to travel the windy roads.
