Tamworth, NSW

Onward and upwards to Tamworth, NSW for a couple of nights. Never stayed in Tamworth but been through it several times on our way to somewhere else.

Tamworth is a city in northeast New South Wales known for the annual Tamworth Country Music Festival, which draws big-name international acts. Tamworth has about 42,000 people living in and in surroundings areas.

On 9 November 1888, Tamworth became the first location in Australia to have electric street lighting powered by a municipally owned power station, giving the city the title of "First City of Light".
The first streetlights used in Australia were commercially owned in Waratah Tasmania in 1886.

The caravan park we stayed in was rather full due to the BATS, fruit bats, flying foxes that were hanging in the trees by the river which kept people away from the other couple of the caravan parks.  The city was really having great problems the time we were there.
A couple of species one species was protected.

Was still cold in Tamworth and winter woollies were certainly on. We rugged up went to the lookout, most places have a lookout.

The above photo show the city area to the left of the road.
Below is the caravan park we stayed at.

The grounds on the hill were certainly well maintained.

Some buildings in Tamworth - rather like the Art Deco.
Below the Catholic School and Church plus Offices.

  2. It's a much larger town that I thought it would be. There seems to be plenty of street trees, always a good sign. My paternal grandmother came from Waratah, Tasmania. I wonder how a commercial company makes money from owning street lights.

    1. The main street has wonderful trees down each side and they do look pretty with the leaves begin to come out.
Oh really, Waratah a rather coolish town with rare waterfall in the town as you drive by :)

  4. I would be afraid the bats might have rabies or something.
The area looks very well maintained.

    1. We don't have rabies in Australia thank goodness, this is why our Quarantine is so strict.
The city and surrounds is well looked after as all is neat and tidy which is a pleasure to see.

  5. Firstly we have NO RABIES in Australia. Recall the furore over the Depp Pouches!
Bats and flying foxes are a real menace in the New England area.

Tamworth is a fantastic city with plenty of top facilities for sports.
The Australian Equestrian Centre is there and worth a visit.

Thankfully the Peel River that divides the city is now flood controlled.
In times of my youth - the 50's the then town was cut in two. Terrible
for the travellers of the New England Highway and the railroad to Armidale and of course the locals.
Education facilities are excellent and then Armidale with the University and the large boarding colleges is not that far north.
Yep I love Tamworth............has everything. I think also has the top flight training centre for commercial pilots in Australia and the Pacific region.
    Cheers

    1. There is much of everything in Tamworth. We too like the city except for those bats that some in winter. Apparently the council cut down heaps of trees, some locals were angry re trees but didn't care for the bats - can't quite work that one out, as the two go together.

  7. Thank you for reminding me that Tamworth is a pretty city. I have been having a bit of a hissy fit about it after our deputy PM forcibly moved a department there.

  11. We had also traveled through Tamworth many times and stayed in October 2016 for the first time (children's cricket took us there). At that time everything was unusually green, a real treat for the eyes.

    1. A good lookout from a town or city is hard to find this one at Tamworth is a good find plus it's the lay of the land too.
