A pleasant area is Mission Beach, it's away from the cities and is much quieter. Populations of about 1,000 people and several resorts to stay in if one wishes.
Crocodiles are present in the Mission Beach area, as it's considered 'croc country' in tropical Queensland, with both freshwater and estuarine species living in the region's waterways, around all water bodies, especially after high tides or heavy rain. Swimming, yes you can but be aware of those 'stingers' that are in the sea water in the months of summer. It's fairly safe to swim between the flags on patrolled beaches there.
You can see Dunk Island, Bederra Island, Wheeler Island, Coombe Island, and Bowden Island, and I think there are a few more as well.
Where all the markers are is where Mission Beach is.

Margaret, answering Helgs' curiosity, I will say that they play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems. There are various organizations and programs dedicated to the conservation of crocodiles around the world. ReplyDeleteAs far as I know all our beaches are clean Angie. Everyone of them we have been to, there are always rubbish bins nearby and people usually use them.

DeleteI went swimming at Mission Beach in the 1970s and I don't remember any croc or stinger warning signs. I must have been lucky to have to survive.

DeleteWe didn't see any crocs when we were there and I doubt if many people do or did. It's just the fact that Mission Beach is in the tropics and any place in the tropics that has water/sea water/rivers and so on, be on the lookout.

ReplyDeleteI'd say relative safe to swim, maybe there are nets in the sea to help keep people safe from stingers and we didn't see any crocs there when we visited a few years back, and never heard of any being there either - it's all just a warning incase.

When I was younger and still working I planned on retiring at Mission Beach, but then the factory closed and grandchildren came along so I've stayed right here. I don't think I'd want to retire there now that I know about the crocodiles.

ReplyDeleteI had a paddle, I can't go to a beach and not stick my toes in the water, that's just me. I believe everyone should learn to swim, maybe you can swim, I can to save myself and used to do a far bit of it when much younger.

Baili, Mission Beach is a very long way from where we live, we visited there on one of our holidays a few years ago. We didn't see any crocodiles, it's just that that particular beach is in the tropic of Australia so one expect to see a crocodile or two, we never did see any at all.

DeletePretty beaches. Crocs you say. Think that would keep me from wanting to swim. Currently in South Carolina where gators are very common place. You see them almost daily, and they've had troubles with them going after people's pets. Hopefully you don't have that issue with your crocs.

DeleteYou most likely wouldn't see a croc at all in the water there, it just sounds as if you would when written or if someone was telling you. It's just beware really.
Seeing Dunk Island just offshore is such a tease if you don't hop on the water taxi those rainforest trails on the island are incredible. Plus, spotting a cassowary in the wild there is basically a rite of passage.
