The construction of the Paris Dam began in 1935, and was completed less than a year later, in 1936. It was preciously referred to as the Morning Star Dam. The dam is the only one of a buttress and slab construction in Tasmania, and one of just a handful of that construction in the coutry.
The wall has a lenght of 250m and a maximum height of 16m. So, the dam had water storage of about 1300 megalitres covering almost 21 hectares (52 acres).
After a few owners of the dam a hole appeared and a large crack in the near the base of the dam wall. It wasn't repaired I'm led to believe.
I'd never heard of the Paris Dam until a few years ago when we decided to drive up this gravel road in the north east of Tasmania, and it was there we saw a sign to the dam which was an old sign so we didn't venture on any further.
These photos are from the internet.
Margaret, so obsevo is currently deprecated. At some point it was used to reservoir water.
ReplyDeleteIt was used to store water but not anymore.
DeleteA high dam.
ReplyDeleteYes the wall of it is high as most dams are high up.
DeleteCompleted in less than a year? That would never happen today though sadly the crack and the hole probably could. An impressive structure, and expensive to just walk away from.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was completed in less then a year according to my research, so that is amazing. I couldn't seem to find out the full story of this dam EC.
DeleteInteresting info about the dam. It only took a year to build is very impressive.
ReplyDeleteIt's very impressive and built differently so I read.
DeleteThey look really impressive!
ReplyDeleteIt sure does Angie.
DeleteLove the composition and the grand scale of the structure
ReplyDeleteOh yes, the photos are good. Apparently the rocks are slippery but someone got down on their tummy to take some of these photos - so thanks to whoever, I'm grateful.
DeleteI was initially impressed that it only took one year to construct but maybe that was what led to its failure. It is very impressive though.
ReplyDeleteYou are probably correct on the hole that appeared, it was the way the dam was constructed.
DeleteIt looks intriguing. I would be tempted to go explore it!
ReplyDeleteI'm told it's well worth going to take a peek at that dam, the rocks are slippery, the road in isn't the best but I'm sure you all would enjoy a bit of a challenge :)
DeleteI'm too old for visiting there now, if I'd known the dam was there a few years back I would have gone then.
Besos.
ReplyDeleteYes, no one there and there probably would be snakes there is time of year and further on seeing it's summer.
ReplyDeleteThat's true it looking like a movie set, I can imagine a film being shot there :)
DeleteUnas imagenes de impresionante belleza.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who took the photos but they are beautifully done.
DeleteThis dam looks impressive.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they should restore it, now with climate change it is always useful to have a water supply.
Greetings Irma
It's a wonder someone hasn't restored it Irma, we seem to have plenty of water for hydropower and have had for many years, lets' hope that doesn't change.
DeleteYou'd have trouble keeping me away from a place with some many interesting possible shots! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome. Yes, a good place to be in all season and all weathers for some good shots.
Someone found this Mt Paris dam a few years back and now many people who are interested and can walk the not so friendly path visit and take their photos.
DeleteIt is generally accepted that the construction of most dams was sheer folly anyway, and in North America many have been decommissioned and are being dismantled to restore original water courses. Why do we always assume we know better than Mother Nature? Now we are starting to get our comeuppance.
ReplyDeleteYou are right on the waterways, so many disasters have happened because man changed the path.
DeleteTo have that finished in such a short period of time is an extraordinary achievement.
ReplyDeleteIt was but the people worked hard in those days, they were a different breed of people compared to todays men...no offense meant but that's the way it was and is in my eyes.
DeleteParis Dam is beautiful, I love it.
ReplyDeletePicturesque it is for sure Bob.
Good area where the dam is - the houses are rather nice, will show more as time goes on.
DeleteHow sad...
ReplyDeletehugs
Donna
It is Donna, but that's life.
DeleteSince major public projects largely have to be funded by the state or Federal governments, how did this dam have "a few owners"?
ReplyDeleteIt was a private dam I believe Hels.
ReplyDeleteFeliz domingo.
Yes I saw the water there too, but there is not a lot these days apparently.
ReplyDeleteYes it would seem to be useful but apparently not as that dam would have been maintained by someone coming forth to do so.
DeleteDams are often beautiful pieces of construction these photos show that
ReplyDeleteThat's very true Jo-Anne and each dam is different.
DeleteLovely photos, Happy new week
ReplyDeleteThank you Melody.
DeleteIt seems that the old concrete dum fits this nature view.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't seem to look out of place as nature has taken a good turn and grown.
DeleteThe photos are magnificent.
ReplyDeleteThey are, I would credit the photographers if I knew who they were.
DeleteVery impressive Margaret, super photos!
ReplyDeleteThey are lovely Denise.
DeleteVery impressive that it only took a year to build!
ReplyDeleteI like the photographs/images you've shared.
All the best Jan
Thank you Jan. It certainly didn't take them long to build, they must have got stuck right into it.
DeleteWow these pictures look amazing! I've never been to Australia and have always wanted to go, so nice seeing some images of life in Australia! Thanks for sharing!

Well never saw such interesting looking dam before dear Margaret
ReplyDeleteThe hole in the wall of the dam sounds scary.
Hope it was not area damage because of it
A very tall dam with an interesting construction, it's a shame it's abandoned.
