A construction in the North East.

The construction of the Paris Dam began in 1935, and was completed less than a year later, in 1936.  It was preciously referred to as the Morning Star Dam.  The dam is the only one of a buttress and slab construction in Tasmania, and one of just a handful of that construction in the coutry.
The wall has a lenght of 250m and a maximum height of 16m.  So, the dam had water storage of about 1300 megalitres covering almost 21 hectares (52 acres).
After a few owners of the dam a hole appeared and a large crack in the near the base of the dam wall.  It wasn't repaired I'm led to believe.

I'd never heard of the Paris Dam until a few years ago when we decided to drive up this gravel road in the north east of Tasmania, and it was there we saw a sign to the dam which was an old sign so we didn't venture on any further.

These photos are from the internet.

  1. Margaret, so obsevo is currently deprecated. At some point it was used to reservoir water.

  2. Completed in less than a year? That would never happen today though sadly the crack and the hole probably could. An impressive structure, and expensive to just walk away from.

    1. Yes, it was completed in less then a year according to my research, so that is amazing. I couldn't seem to find out the full story of this dam EC.

    1. Oh yes, the photos are good. Apparently the rocks are slippery but someone got down on their tummy to take some of these photos - so thanks to whoever, I'm grateful.

  5. I was initially impressed that it only took one year to construct but maybe that was what led to its failure. It is very impressive though.

    1. You are probably correct on the hole that appeared, it was the way the dam was constructed.

    1. I'm told it's well worth going to take a peek at that dam, the rocks are slippery, the road in isn't the best but I'm sure you all would enjoy a bit of a challenge :)
I'm too old for visiting there now, if I'd known the dam was there a few years back I would have gone then.

  7. El lugar se ve precioso, pero da un poco de miedo al estar abandonada. Besos.

  10. This dam looks impressive.
Maybe they should restore it, now with climate change it is always useful to have a water supply.

    1. It's a wonder someone hasn't restored it Irma, we seem to have plenty of water for hydropower and have had for many years, lets' hope that doesn't change.

    1. Someone found this Mt Paris dam a few years back and now many people who are interested and can walk the not so friendly path visit and take their photos.

  13. It is generally accepted that the construction of most dams was sheer folly anyway, and in North America many have been decommissioned and are being dismantled to restore original water courses. Why do we always assume we know better than Mother Nature? Now we are starting to get our comeuppance.

    1. You are right on the waterways, so many disasters have happened because man changed the path.

  14. To have that finished in such a short period of time is an extraordinary achievement.

    1. It was but the people worked hard in those days, they were a different breed of people compared to todays men...no offense meant but that's the way it was and is in my eyes.

  16. Since major public projects largely have to be funded by the state or Federal governments, how did this dam have "a few owners"?

  18. Decisamente imponente come costruzione, peccato che non sia funzionante, potrebbe essere utile in momenti di penuria di acqua

    1. Yes it would seem to be useful but apparently not as that dam would have been maintained by someone coming forth to do so.

The hole in the wall of the dam sounds scary.
