Broken Hill Living Sculptures the Living Desert is nestled amongst the Barrier Rangers and is about 12km from the City of Broken Hill. It's a unique 2,400ha reserve which was established in 1992. The scenery within the reserve is breathtaking and can be enjoyed via the numerous walking trails.
The sculptures are on the highest hill inside the reserve and there are 12 sandstone sculptures, created in 1993 by a group of artists from all over the world, which are now one of the top attractions in Outback NSW. The area is closed due to Covid-19.
The distance to Broken Hill is 1,375 km from where I live.
This was our first and only trip from Tasmania to Broken Hill in 20 years of travelling. We took travelled in our car staying in Motels and eating out.
The sculptures are very beautiful and integrate perfectly into the landscape.

The sculptures were done by different people in some countries as well as Australia. What the sculptures tell or are meant to say I can't totally remember enough to say. But some will have a snake, lizard a kangaroo which would mean sometime to the indigenous people. From memory one had to have a good imagination :)

Sometimes there are guided tours from Broken Hill to the Living Sculptures where by a bus collects you the driver then gives a tour explaining what each sculpture means and who did each sculpture. Hopefully soon the place will open once again.

DeleteThe Broken Hill sculptures are amazing and glad they have survived for over 25 years in what looks like a very remote location. ReplyDeleteVery remote there Beatrice, you drive for miles and don't see another living human being, sometimes you see a car coming towards you and just teeth inside of the car, sounds funny but it's a aboriginal person driving :)

ReplyDeleteThey are impressive and they are situated out of town has a nice pathway around them, we heard about them from the people in the motels we stayed in, then the tourist office.
