Richmond Gaol, (3) Richmond, Tasmania

Back to Richmond Gaol...the second last post about it.
This video goes for a couple of minutes and is worth viewing as it has information about the inside of the Richmond Gaol.
Plus there are photos which I took.

The cat of nine tails was used every second morning for flogging.

The toilets.

A fire place.

  3. A sentence for U.S. readers: I was on the way to the gaol when I ran over the kerb and had to buy a new tyre. Spell-check hated all of those. In any event--- great pictures, as before, and a fun tour with the video as well.

    1. It must have been very hopeless to what we know these days.

  8. Double toilets make me shudder. As does the cat of nine tails. Every second day? Some of them must have be scarred for life.
And no, not somewhere I would like to live either. Predictable aren't we?

  9. What a horrible way to wake and remember which day it is, flogging day or not flogging day.

    1. Would have been awful, but they would know what was coming. Wouldn't not have liked to live back then and see or heard the torture.

  10. Horrific to the 100th degree. One wonders HAVE we improved since those days.
As for seeing ghosts, nightmares would be more like it.
So good to see that this horror establishment has been preserved for us to
    now visit.
    Cheers

Always good to have our past history at hand and able to visit even thought it's not nice to know what happened back then..

  12. A very informative video, I'd like to visit Richmond Gaol one day.
I believe you meant cat of nine tails (not nail tails); it's a whip with nine long lashes on the end so each swing would cut nine times.

    1. Lol at my typing :) It's the Irish in me, you know!
      Will fix it..
Not very nice the nine tails, I presume many a person back then had scars from the lashings.

  15. Interesting information but this place must have been an awful place for those who were forced to stay there.
