Just over 1 year ago my husband pruned the Magnolia tree in our garden. I didn't think it would survive with such a brutal pruning, however, it did, and the other day I took a couple of photos of it.
Magnolia Rustica Rubra.
The photos below were taken before it was pruned.
Ohlalá! Magnolias... Hermosas imágenes, me encantó.
ReplyDeleteGracias por compartir.
Hasta pronto!
Thank you, Clarisa.
DeleteAbsolutely gorgeous, Margaret.
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda.
DeleteThey are all very beautiful, Margaret. Do you know the variety names?
ReplyDeleteThank you, Marit. We really can't remember what that magnolia is called but I've put a link and it's the same as the photo of our magnolia.

Thank you so much, Margaret. I understand you very well. It's not easy to remember names on plants. Anyway it is a very beautiful plant with lovely flowers.
DeleteIt seems your husband knew what he was doing. : ):)
ReplyDeleteOh yes, he's a hard pruner at times. He was a nurseryman and Horticulturalist :) but of course he can't recall everything about plants etc.
Deletewow...this is so very beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Angie.
Deletethank you!
ReplyDeleteYour welcome.
DeleteVery beautiful indeed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bill.
DeleteThose flowers are so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThey are pretty and in a big tree they look gorgeous.
DeleteWow, so glad it made it through. I had the petals are safe to eat. Do you know if that is true? I saw a guy eat them as he was photographing them.
ReplyDeleteYes some magnolias you can eat the petals, this particular one is ok = Magnolia x soulangeana petals are edible, you can infuse the leaves for tea or pickles you can make. Some magnolias are not suitable for this and there not advisable to chew etc. So I guess you have to know which magnolia leaves are the good ones.
DeleteHope that answers you question..
It's very neat. The guy I saw eat the one he was eating said it was lightly sweet. I love that. I love eating wild garlic and garlic lemon plants. So good.
DeleteThe magnolias are lovely and plenty of them here.
ReplyDeleteIn my garden is a red and pinkish one.
Mother duck here with her 11 uncontrollable "brats" is at her wits end.
I now know why the father duck - the drake - sits on the bar at the Terrigal
hotel drinking himself into oblivion!!
The whales are still going by but way out - I have seen from a friend photos
taken with a drone thing of them with their "Calves" on their way to Japan/Korean waters for breeding and then they return to Antarctica on the west coast????
Must like circumnavigating Australia!!!
Maybe a sit on the beach but it is not sunny here and the Chinese non-stop
talking tourists are in full swing. They all talk at once - the bus going down
is like being in a demented canary or budgerigar cage! Yak yak yak and LOUD!
Still they enjoy themselves in a funny way, I suppose?????
I am damn sure that magnolia leaves are NOT for eating.
Cheers
Colin
I am convinced that in Terrigal - the central area of apartments etc.
Deletehave NO kitchens or people can't even boil water.
The expensive restaurants are packed to the rafters!
A paradise for money making!!
The surf is as flat as a pancake and only a few swimmers or are they
Eskimoes braving the freeze!
Colin
Magnolias are rather popular in many areas of our land, Colin.
DeleteMother duck with have to come down on her little ones and teach them their manners, she will you know.
Amazing how nature send the whales to all these places and go around Australia!
I heard a few years back that some houses were being built without kitchens and then I read just the other day where someone who is someone of note said that we may not have evens in the future, we will have airfryers that will take their place!
You can eat one variety of magnolia leaves apparently Colin...I won't be thoughl.
Uy que lindas. te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteThank you, J.P.
DeleteThat looks like what I know as Port Wine magnolia.
ReplyDeleteCould be a port wine one, R. I looked it up and the port wine ones are different and the one in this link here is the one we have...

It's good that the tree survived, Margaret.
ReplyDeleteI think the magnolia flowers are very beautiful.
Have a good weekend.
Greetings Irma
Yes, Irma it is good that it did survive with that brutal pruning but husband knows what he's doing as he was a nurseryman and Horticulturalist before retirement. I love the magnolia's flowers any of them.
DeleteThank you and you too.
I don't know that magnolia and it is nice shade. For a couple of weeks of pleasure each year, they are worth their while.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly are worth their while for the flowers and the leaves remain for summer which adds a bit of shade in the garden or wherever. The flowers do last a fair while, then the wind comes, and poof, they are gone, well nearly.
DeleteI saw the word magnolia and was a bit confused-- but then I saw that it was you and remembered that it's Spring there. I almost never get tripped up that way, You caught those beauties very well!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bill. Good job I did a post in season..lol and it is a bit tricky at times when people put snow on their blogs in the middle of our summer, I have to stop and think.
DeleteWow, that is so encouraging to hear. I’m always amazed by how resilient plants can be. It must be so satisfying to see the 'Magnolia Rustica Rubra' thriving and proving you wrong a year later.
ReplyDeletewww.melodyjacob.com
Yes sometimes Melody you don't think they will grow but as time passes if pruned at the correct time growth appears.
Deletethanks again!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome.
DeleteIt is very beauiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you Anne.
DeleteYou must have been very happy to see it come back. The blooms are lovely!
ReplyDeleteVery happy to see those green shoots in the first photo Denise, I thought he'd ruined it..lol but I never say never, he knows what he's doing - well sometimes :) Thank you.
DeleteMy dear Dad was a hard pruner ... he always said it benefited the plants/trees.
ReplyDeleteYour husband did well.
A beautiful colour magnolia.
All the best Jan
Your dad was definitely right in what he said, Jan.
DeleteThank you.
Bella serie de imagenes... Una flor preciosa, amiga
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ildefonso.
DeleteVerry pretty flower
ReplyDeleteThey are a lovely flower and big enough to see and make a pretty show on a tree.
DeleteMy goodness this is one of the most beautiful trees I have seen dear Margaret 🤗🥰♥️
ReplyDeleteUndoubtedly Magnolia tree is exceptionally resilient 👍🥰
These blossoms are really pretty 👌♥️
A rather hard tree Baili. Most Magnolias do blossom well putting on a rather pretty show.
DeleteThe magnolias look gorgeous. Some houses here are built without ovens and I can see that trend accelerating, I have to say we hardly use ours other than for baking. We never cook a roast or have traditional “dinners.” We have two woks and principally cook in them and the air fryer sees regular service too.
ReplyDeleteThank you, David.
DeleteOld fashioned in this house, rather use my oven for a baked dinner and I do cook many thing that need an oven in my thinking as I'm used to that. We eat Chinese and use the air fryer for some things, seems everything gets used here.
Sehr schöne Blüten Magnolien sind sehr schön.
ReplyDeleteGruß
Noke
Yes they are, Noke and several species too.
DeleteIt's beautiful, plants regenerate like this and come back with even more splendor and beauty.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice week.
Greetings
Indeed they do.
DeleteThank you and you too.
Such a beautiful reflection! The imagery of magnolias captures serenity and grace, inviting readers to pause and appreciate the delicate moments in life.

I hope you’ll visit my blog
Thank you.
DeleteWow, that’s amazing! Magnolia trees can be so resilient, and it’s great to hear yours bounced back after such a heavy pruning. The Magnolia Rustica Rubra must look beautiful in your garden now!

The wind has blown most of the flowers of it now...that is what happens most years but of course it blooms for a fair while before that happens.
DeleteÉ, de facto, uma árvore extraordinária. Floresce antes que a folhagem reverdeça.
ReplyDeleteAbraço de amizade.
Juvenal Nunes
That's true, and a native of East Asia and the north Americas being around for millions of years.
DeleteYour magnolia has a magnificent color, how good that it's sprouted again...
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to you.
Was so pleased it did shoot again and flower, next year it should have more flowers.
DeleteThank you.
I like that beautiful colour
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely colour that one, Jo-Anne.
Delete4 ducklings left. The mother duck is frantic and these 4 brats are impossible.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder the drake has given up.
The beach yesterday had a few in swimming with some young ones learning
how to ride surf boards and God forbid those motorized contraptions !!!
School holidays and the bus drivers being sent up the wall. Young ones
especially girls ?????? no Opal cards. Sensible drivers don't let them on
and then the language and it ain't French, German or Italian.!!!!
I should take soap on the bus and give mouth washes - ha ha.
Good God in our youth a boot up the pants would be on the cards
and then parents informed and an other clip by father around the mooch!!
Pubbing today.
Cheers
Colin
Many young ones don't have respect these days, it is certainly missing, Colin. I think you would need more than soap for their mouths, but then you wouldn't be permitted to do that these days...sad really.
DeleteGosh only 4 left, that is sad.
School holidays down here as well.
Does pruning involving burning the ends? It looks, from photo 1, that the stubs are black? is that right?
ReplyDeleteMy word, magnolia flowers truly are beautiful. :)
Liam.
No burning at the ends, Liam. My husband put black paint there and that stops the rot, eg water getting into the tree, or you can use axel grease! He was a Nurseryman and was a Horticulturist before he retired at age 55 years! We had a retail shop also a rather large one next to the nursery for many years, and when I finished working as a Registered Nurse I went there and worked - so two careers for me.
DeleteMagnolia trees are certainly beautiful and there are many varieties of them.
Ha echado muy buenas flores. Son preciosas.
ReplyDeleteSaludos.
Yes they are indeed beautiful.
DeleteThank you.
So beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI agree :)
DeleteDid you have a particular passion for magnolia? Do you still have it?
ReplyDeleteWouldn't call it a passion Hels, more a like for the magnolia trees in general, being so ancient.
DeleteYes, the photos are of our tree and my photos that I took this season.
Margaret, gracias que no se secó, porque es preciosa, me encanta. Besos.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, Teresa, so pleased it grew after the hard pruning.
DeleteSo beautiful. I love it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nas.
DeleteI love flowers and Magnolia is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThey are wonderful to see and have if you are able too.
DeleteIn the first photo, it looks like it was pruned quite radically, but it survived and is now reborn and blooming.
ReplyDeleteMagnolias are spectacular flowers. What an incredibly beautiful color these magnolias have❤️
Many greetings and all the best for you
