Cardwell, Queensland is a town between Townsville (south) and Cairns (north). A small population of about 1,400 people, the town itself is on the highway and in the tropics. Cyclones appear once in a while, the area also can flood in the rainy season.
Crocodiles can be seen laying on the beach, but we didn't see any, turtles abundant in the sea near the jetty, fascinating watching them. I've done a few posts on Cardwell but never shown these photos.
We've stayed at Cardwell a few times over the years and this one time late in the afternoon we went to the jetty to look at the sea and see the nice view of Hinchinbrook Island and other Islands when two locals stopped and had a good chat with us. The conversations lasted till after sunset, hence that photos below and we were bitten by these tiny little insects which we didn't notice at the time, the next day was spent itching!
The first Europeans settled there in 1864.
Hi Margaret,
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful photographs you show. I shudder when you mention crocodiles. I hope you never see any crocodiles there.
Thank you. I hope that we don't see them there either, Marit.
DeleteHi Margaret, crocodiles 🐊 would spook 👻 me. LOL! Beautiful ❤️ scenes in your lovely photos. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome, Linda.
DeleteHi Margaret, the photos of this town look lovely, but learning about the crocodiles was a bit scary. Thanks for the lovely photos, have a great week. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you. Lucky we didn't see any crocodiles in the area but also wary they could be about.
DeleteMy first impression was "What a great place to spend some time and swim". No, no. I take it back. No swimming for sure!! And not even walking on the beach.
ReplyDelete: )
Definitely no swimming as there are stingers there too at time especially in the warmer weather.
DeleteA beautiful town....but with crocodiles laying on the beach? wow...I don't think I dare to venture into that area.
ReplyDeleteYou would be alright in the area, and we never saw any crocodiles on the beach, I doubt there wouldn't be many if any. Maybe the man saw a few oneday, and only one time as people do exaggerate.
DeleteWhat a lovely spot. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteIt is, and you are welcome.
DeleteGenial post. Gracias por las imágenes de Cardwell... Bonito pueblo.
ReplyDeleteHasta pronto!
Thank you.
DeleteI immediately picked up on crocodiles on the beach. We have them here in the eastern southern states. Lovely area and I enjoyed looking at the map again. I also love those little meerkats at the bottom of your page :) Thank you Margaret!
ReplyDeleteCute those Meercats :) Denise.
DeleteDon't think I would care to see crocodiles on the beach, but the man that said may have seen one or two, and you know stories they become long and exaggerated.
Not a place I have heard of but then you did say it is a small town so that's not surprising, I liked the photos that are so lovely
ReplyDeleteThe town is on the highway going north Jo-Anne.
DeleteThank you re photos.
Your visit is full of charm and local warmth, with the added touch of nature’s surprises
ReplyDeleteVery true, it's always good to have a chat to a local/s you learn much about the area even though it might be exaggerated.
DeleteEs un bello lugar. te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteThank you J.P.
DeleteYep it is a nice area.
ReplyDeleteHad an amusing episode in Port Douglas with former US President Bill Clinton.
I went into a bar/restaurant and Bill was in there. We got talking - he si a really friendly fellow and he sure can drink!!!
So we sat and talked and drank!!!! Copiously.
Then lunch and he can eat!!! One large steak with salad, chips and mashed
potatoes. He then decided he'd like to try crocodile!!! I smartly told him it was
horrible. Anyhow he ordered the stuff - looked OK BUT one mouthful and spat out!
I just said - "Told you so" Much mirth. So back to the beer!!!
Hillary was out with the native people looking at aboriginal art work.
One of the staff took a photo for Bill, I got a copy - now bloody lost!!!!
The following day Bill went out with the whale inspectors to tab some
migrating whales - I could have gone but I get sick on the Manly ferry!!!
I ran into Hillary - she informed me that was responsible for Bill's vomiting!!!
But she laughed - so we went and had coffee. She is a charming person
and full of jokes and mischief!!!!
On another visit to Port Douglas I had Barack Obama and Michele - my God she can talk but they were great. Lunch with them!!!
Seems that former US Presidents love the place!!!
All started with George Bush (Senior) - Port Douglas has great golf courses and
US Presidents love golf - only the present clot-head cheats and I dare say hasn't a clue where Australia is - so Port Douglas wlll not have to be fumigated!!!!
Lovely day here - funny scenes at the Beach yesterday - it pays to
take off swimmers in the change room not under the showers on the promenade.
Accidents happen - giving the ladies a good look and laugh!!!
Cheers
Colin
Oops - re vomiting comment - Hillary blamed ME!!!
DeleteI was totally innocent !!!?????
Colin
Beach report!
DeleteFlat as a pancake BUT young 12-14 year old school wagers
enjoying board riding - bring back truant inspectors and do parents
care anymore?????
Colin
Interesting Colin. It's very nice area Port Douglas, as is Cardwell.
DeleteNice area and beautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bill.
DeleteI can feel the tropical humidity in the photos. It does look nice though.
ReplyDeleteOh yes even in winter it was a bit humid, can only imagine what it would be like in summer, worse than the Sunshine Coast for sure.
DeleteLovely little place, small yet sweet.
I have never been further north than Brisbane but once thought I might retire at Mission Beach. Now I'm glad I didn't, with the cyclones and floods I'd be miserable, not to mention too far from family and grandchildren.
ReplyDeleteYes Mission Beach is a long way north from SA. The beach is just a beach there at Mission Beach R. It's hard to choose where to live up north due to what you have mentioned.
DeleteIt looks a lovely place to spend a balmy evening . What a shame you got eaten by insects tho, but luckily not by a crocodile.
ReplyDeleteNever will we forget the insects, those tiny wee ones.
DeleteWhat beautiful photos, Margaret.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful scenery there with the mountains.
I wish you a wonderful new week.
Greetings Irma
Thank you Irma.
DeleteI agree with the other Bill. Good stuff!
ReplyDelete:) Thanks.
DeleteCardwell is certainly a beautiful and peaceful town.
ReplyDeleteNever swim, and I'd only walk on the beach if I didn't see any crocodiles, and even then, I'd always be on alert 😁 😂 🤣
The photos are fantastic, I especially loved the 1st and 6th.
No one ever swims there as there's a lot turtles in the water, just heaps of them plus stingers the latter mainly when the weather warms up so early spring.
DeleteThank you, Maria.
I would enjoy seeing the crocodiles on the beach. From a safe distance, of course, but they are high on the list of every wildlife watched, I think.
ReplyDeleteI do believe we would be lucky to see a crocodile on that beach even though the man told us, he probably exaggerated. Plenty of turtles in the sea, never seen so many close together.
DeleteMargaret, hermosas fotos de ese pueblo qué se lo ve tan bello y tranquilo. que paz.
ReplyDeleteBesos, te sigo me gustó tu blog.
Thank you..
DeleteSorry to hear you got bug bitten but the pictures are great.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Those bug bites were so annoying and lasted for many days, the itch did.
DeleteBeautiful photographs but sorry about the biting bugs!
ReplyDeleteWishing you a happy month of September.
All the best Jan
Happy month of September to you too Jan and thank you.
DeleteIs the jetty used for fishing? I don't eat meat, but fresh fish is very appealing.
ReplyDeleteWe did see a person fishing there but boats take people across to the Island.
DeleteMost fish is always good to eat, Hels.
Has captado un bello paisaje... Un paraiso en la tierra
ReplyDeleteOh yes, beautiful there the scenery.
DeleteA Austrália é um território enorme e com uma grande biodiversidade e beleza natural.
ReplyDeleteContinuação de bom fim de semana.
Abraço de amizade.
Juvenal Nunes
Thank you, Juvenal. Yes, Australia is a big country and so many different landscapes.
DeleteNice pictures Margaret,
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice place. Wonderful views over the water. That first picture has a great view through with the leaves around. Wonderful.
Many greetings,
Marco
Lovely post. Have a nice day.
ReplyDeleteI love how peaceful and tropical Cardwell is. Your photos make it feel like I’m standing on the jetty watching the turtles too. I laughed imagining the tiny insect bites sneaking up on you after that lovely evening chat with the locals.
