A poem after Valentine's Day

A beautiful poem by George Gordon Bryon 1788 - 1824.

She Walks in Beauty is a short poem celebrating female beauty.  The beauty of the woman the speaker describes is in both her external appearance and her inner goodness.  Although it might generally be classified as a love poem the poet never actually declares that love.

An interesting poem for St. Valentine's Day.

SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that' best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus, mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling place.

And on that cheek, an o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

  1. And that is a beautiful poem. It's ages since I've read it.

Happy Valentine's Day to you, Margaret. Valentine's Day, in my opinion, is not only for lovers. It is for all humans throughout the world. And, how I wish more of those humans would realise that, and stop the hate and prejudice.

    Take good care. :)

    1. Thank you Anita. The rose does smell gorgeous, not many roses have perfume these days.
I used to make a lot of graphics once, but don't seem to make many these days.

  7. Oh Oh - romance in the Tassie air stream???
I often wondered about those winds from the Indian Ocean!!

    MY DAY !!!!!
A card for me is delivered under the door at the Erina Fair newsagency.
    Valintine's!!!
I collect in amazement - just "love from a friend?????"
I get to Erina Fair about 9.00am every morning except Sunday
as I watch religiously "INSIDERS" comes on at 9.00am.
Now after my battle royal on the beach. The newsagency got the cameras checked
and was told it was put there at 5.00 am by a tall blonde girl of about 20 ????
Now what do you make of that - stalker or mystery admirer????
Alfred Hitchcock might have to investigate???? or a movie - me played by
George Clooney - now stop laughing.

I went this morning to the Beach here in Terrigal - no winds at all where I live
or at Erina Fair - BUT it was a gale down there - so much for sitting in the sun
    and reading the Murdock "rag".

A battle royal and the wind won!!!
Sort that one out Miss Marple??

    Cheers
    Colin

    1. Good to join in Colin.
Well now, a Valentine's Day card for you! A secret admirer maybe or perhaps a lovely young lady who may have thought you deserved a card! Who know, certainly a mystery for Sherlock Holmes!
      The mystery of Erina Fair...lol
Mostly windy by the sea, does make it difficult to sit and read.

  10. This is beautiful Margaret, an old classic that never goes out of style :) I forgot all about doing a Valentine's post today. I appreciated yours all the more, thank you! If I haven't mentioned it before, I love your header shot of all the mailboxes. It truly is a wonderful sight to come across them in the countryside. I would be delighted to see these.

  12. Your rose is beautiful, as is your graphic. But your header just stops me in my tracks. What a truly delightful scene. Where there are multiple letter boxes around here there seems to be a rule that they conform to a certain height and a certain model. Luckily, different colours are allowed but nothing too cheerful or outlandish. When did this need for conformity creep in, I wonder?

    1. Thank you Pauline. I thought maybe the letter boxes have to be the same height for the postman to make it easier. Have no idea when they all had to be similar or outlandish as some are but not with letterboxes..

  21. In Poland, we also celebrate such a holiday, although it is not a holiday and is usually celebrated by lovers and, generally speaking, couples. As I am single, I do not celebrate such a day, but I respect it and understand the need for such a day for lovers.

I really agree with first comment that Valentine’s Day should not be considered for lovers but a core message of love and mutual respect for humanity 🥹♥️
