Emus, Northern Territory, Australia

On one of our travels up the middle of Australia we stopped into a place for the night as did many others travelling in caravans and or motorhomes.  The people that own the property share a large piece of their land for we Travellers to stay in or on.  There is no power, but water is available which is bore water.

Most of us were preparing or thinking of getting our evening meal when I looked out the door of our caravan and saw this thing realizing it was a tame emu sticky beaking at the door of the motor home of these people in the photo.  I'd never seen an Emu close up.  I'm aware they can get vicious and use their claws to their advantage, I was careful.

Katherine River, Northern Territory.

Please check your 'spam box', I think many of my comments I've made on your blogs have gone there....I check my spam everyday before I answer my comments, seems a few are going in there still.

Katherine in the Northern Territory of Australia is a sweet town in the outback.  The town is next to the Katherine River 320km South of Darwin at the top of Australia.  The town is known as when the outback meets the tropics.

The first people to live there were of course the Aboriginals, and more history is here.
There are still Aboriginals there, some live near the town.  Each time we have stayed in Katherine I've seen the Native people sitting on a small bank with a cooked chicken they bought from the shop, the chicken sitting in the sun and that's for hours, then they eat it without ill effect.
In the winters when we have been there it can be hot weather and cooler nights.  The town is kept clean, and the river area also.
In one area of the Katherine River is sand and shady trees but the people don't swim because you just might happen to see a crocodile, also you have to look where you are treading due to same on land.

The Crocodile

We visited Litchfield National Park in 2015 in the Northern Territory. I did a post on it so copied what I wrote.  The purpose to show 3 photos of this area is that just a couple of days ago a man got scratched and bitten by a crocodile where people swim in what is known as Wangi Falls. There are several wire meshed areas to help keep the crocodiles out but unfortunately it had been raining rather heavy and the water had risen thus a crocodile got in.

As you can see by the map at the bottom of the post we were a very long way from home.

Litchfield National Park, covering approximately 1500 km², is near the township of Batchelor, 100 km south-west of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. Each year the park attracts over 260,000 visitors.  The park was established in 1986.

Aboriginal people have lived throughout the area for thousands of years. It is important to the Mak Mak Marranunggu (northern portion), Werat and Waray (southern portion) Aboriginal people whose Ancestral Spirits formed the landscape, plants and animals and are still present in the landscape today.

The day we went there it was 35degC, a lovely winter's day though rather warm.  The waterfalls are a welcome sight with many people taking advantage of the water to cool down.

The first photo is borrowed and the crocodile is 3.2 meters long, it will be relocated to another area I guess but I did read where a crocodile will be euthanised, so have no idea which article is true.
The remaining photos are mine taken back when we were there.

Mindil Beach, NT

Mindil Beach at Darwin is a popular one especially for the Mindil Market which I've never attended as I'm not a market person.  There is another post done in 2015 and here is the link to the Market video.
In this post the first photo is of the first vehicle we had to tow out first caravan.  The remainder of the photos are of the beach the last photo is another beach further along to the east of Darwin with two men going fishing with a net.

Darwin, NT

Darwin in the Northern Territory (NT) down by the sea in the tropics of Australia.

The first photo is of the War Memorial.  2nd is of the Wharf in the distance with the flower Bougainvillea in the foreground. 3rd is of Government House and the 4th of the garden outside the fence. Government House in Darwin was built to let the sea breeze flow through with a lot of shutters seen on the ground floor.

The trees above around a Government building, then canoes and a lot of yachts, on our last visit to this area in Darwin not so many plus the eating houses were no more, just one or two shops were open, totally different .

The photo is of one of the beach areas looking towards Beagle Gulf/Timor Sea.

Darwin, NT

Darwin the the Capital of the Northern Territory (NT). The population is about 82,000 people. Darwin is in the Tropics of Australia, it's hot and humid in Summer and not too bad in Winer but still humid and hot. There are several beaches and one must be careful of the Saltwater Crocodiles if you see any. We never have in the area.
We have been 3 times to Darwin seeing it change over the years and of course we travelled with the caravan behind us first and second time with our other caravan and vehicle.  The distance is on the map below from home to Darwin via the road.  There isn't a great deal to see along the way, a few towns and off the road camping in peoples paddocks is very handy with a few dollars given to the owner, no water or power.   The terrian is flat, some of it desert with the road usually very straight.

The first photo is of the Mall, or more like it just part of it.

Second photo is what was left of a building after Cyclone Tracy which arrived in Darwin at Christmas time in 1974, it just flattened Darwin and the noise of the Cyclone can be heard at the museum, just a dreadful noise as we went there and listened.

Third photo is of a Public building, the fourth one can't recall what it houses but I believe it survived the Cyclone even though it's near to the sea.

The remainder of the photos are of the caravan park, the palms, the fruit bats come to eat those in the evening and one has to make sure the vehicle is not parked underneath those trees as their 'business' stains the vehicles right through the paint.
