Interesting at Rockhampton, Queensland

In winter 2016 a drive to Nerimbera not very far from Rockhampton city is St Christophers Chapel at Nerimbera. The Chapel was erected in 1943 by the American 542 Engineers, Ship and Shore Battalion.  The timber and stone chapel was built on Harbour Board land made available to the U.S, Army by the Queensland Government.  It reflects the presence of American troops in Queensland during the Second World War and stands as the only structure of it's kind in Australia.

The area around the chapel has been used as a convalescent camp for American troops based around Rockhampton to rest after combat operations in the Pacific Islands.  During the peak time of American occupation more than 70,000 American soldiers from the 24th, 32nd and 41st U.S Army combat divisions, and One Army Corps - "1Corps", were stationed in the Rockhampton area.

The church was used for all denominations at that time and still is when every year a church service is held on the nearest Sunday to July 4.

More about St. Christophers Chapel is [ here ]

Not that many Australians or Americans realize or know about St. Christopers Chapel.

The way to Rockhampton, Queensland

September 5, 2016 we left Mackay and drove to Rockhampton in Queensland where we stayed on our way up north, now, on our way down south.
Just over 100klm we stopped for some lunch (chips) at Camila  a can sugar growing area (another one).
The flower was rather vibrant and the poor house sure needs work done onit.

The car park of the petrol station.  I was told to take photo of that silver car but have no idea why, no one has looked at it since.

Photos of the caravan park we stayed in, you see the laundry with domestic machines, yes they are rather reasonable to use price wise.
Lastly our caravan nestled amid the trees in the shade.
Rockhampton is on the tropic of Capricorn.

A link is of some of the city photos when we visited in 2014

Some Orchids.

The two photos below, 1st one of a small area of the Caravan Park, then the Poinsettia next to the amenities block.
All photos were taken in Mackay, the orchids taken with my phone.

The car park next to the orchid building, our vehicle is the black one.
Many people told us to visit the orchids, we were disappointed as we had seen better on our travels.

A trip to Airlie Beach, Queensland

Last winter whilst staying in Bowen we took a day trip to Airlie Beach to look around.
The beach is rather small the shops were very busy selling touristy items, of course at a high price.
View from the few hills is lovely looking over the sea and it's a popular place to live with approx. 7, 900 people swelling of course in the winter time.

Just on from the town Airlie Beach is the place where you can catch a ferry to the Whitsunday Islands which are resorts and apparently very nice.

There's a large parking area on a hill further up the road where one can catch the ferry to the Islands.

Beaches at Bowen, Queensland

More beaches at Bowen in Queensland.
There is a resort to the left of the first palm, but not a private beach however it seems as if one is trespassing because the ground floor doors open up onto the grassed area.

We went for a paddle in the water here at another beach.  A resort at the same beach below.

Another beach at Bowen called Queens Bay and the view to part of the Whitsunday Islands

Happy Easter

Have been watching 'Bates Motel' based loosely on the Psycho movie of Alfred Hitchcock's which he directed and produced in 1960.
Bates Motel is on Netflix (Australia) but only 3 seasons so far, it's a drama/thriller indeed but I wouldn't call it a horror TV Series.  It's ever so amazing how Norman Bates mind works with the acting of Freddie Highmore showing it off extremely well.
Max Thieriot, I like him :) plays Norman Bates's half brother Dylan Massett in the Series.

On Tuesday last we had an early Dr.'s appointment to have the Flu Injection but only last years model was available, we skipped that one will wait for new one to arrive.

I often wonder why some people are dumb or indeed don't listen.
My husband told his friend not to phone on Tuesday morning at a certain time as we both would be in the Dr's surgery, husband had turned his phone off but I kept mine on and guess what! my phone rang whilst in the surgery, it was our friend who never phones me.  My phone doesn't ring often and I do turn it off if going to a funeral, or a wedding.

For lunch we decided to head up the Tamar River to Beauty Point about a 50 minute drive away, pulled into parking provided for the Beauty Point Riverfront Hotel and had one of the best lunches we've had in a long time. It was actually nicer than what we've eaten at so called elite restaurants here in the city in the evening..
The view was wonderful, photo below.

Good Friday

Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great FridayBlack Friday or Easter Friday, though the last term properly refers to the Friday in Easter week.

All shops are closed on Good Friday but I'm sure there would be one open somewhere in Tasmania.

What do you do on Good Friday?

The town.

The Larrikin Hotel in Bowen, Queensland.
Was looking for some history on this hotel, couldn't find any but I believe the meals are good there.

Flagstaff Hill, Bowen.

Whist visiting Bowen in Queensland we vetured up to Flagstaff Hill for the view!
The first photo is of the beach where horses are taken to swim.

The above is a view of some of the Whitsunday group of Islands in the distance.

These two photos are of Bowen taken from Flagstaff Hill.

There in the distance is a port that takes coal to wherever.
