From Lucinda we drove to Ingham for the day.
A church and a few graves on the way to Ingham.
Ingham had a lot of Italian people living there and now of course their children. Some of the graves are really beautiful.
The Cemetery depicts the area's strong Mediterranean influences with a magnificent display of tile mausoleums.
In the Catholic section the older style mausoleums are constructed from white stucco and marble, the traditional materials, and contain Gothic style windows and doors. More recent ones are flat-roofed with parapet surrounds and finished with terrazzo and tiles.
It's amazing how different cultures and faiths memorialize their departed and how customs change over the years. Often in poor countries throughout Central and South America I have noticed that graveyards are among the grandest structures in town.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting in what you say David, often it's the same here in Australia.
DeleteI have always loved wandering through cemetaries. The older the better. This one reminded me of the one in Buenos Aires - also a strongly catholic culture.
ReplyDeleteThis cemetery is well kept.
DeleteOh does it sound strange to say that I would love to visit this cemetery because I like to wander through cemetaries
ReplyDeleteNo not strange as many people like to visit graves to look around.
Deletewow great graves I saw in the same style in Italy last year
ReplyDeleteI expect you would.
DeleteThat would make me want to check GPS to make sure I really was in Australia! But they are amazing.
ReplyDeleteMany Italians, Greeks, Polish, Maltese and so on migrated to Australia years ago. They settled in many places within Australia.
DeleteThey certainly look well made
ReplyDeleteThey do Adam
DeleteIn the Philippines just outside Metro Manila, there is the grandest cemetery
ReplyDeleteI have ever visited. The rich ( VERY RICH ) have virtual homes there as graves/mausoleums the sizes of ordinary homes which they stay in on the anniversaries of those entombed....... bit macabre!
Actually I went on a tour and this visit was included.......quite the eye-opener
at the opulence.
Cheers
Colin
Goodness - amazing can imagine.
DeleteI should have put that this mausoleum super home tombs are owned by the
Deletesuper rich Chinese ethnic community, not the Filipino community.......
although maybe the Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos mob no doubt have
rather elaborate resting places - ha ha.
Colin
Ok.
DeleteYes very elaborate as a lot of money has been spent on them.
This is amazing! Far different than my resting spot: on a hill, under a tree with Arlene and her family.
ReplyDeleteAh! You have it all sorted out then when the time comes.
DeleteI've never seen so many mausoleums in one place before, now that I think about it, I don't think I've seen any at all here in Adelaide and I didn't visit cemeteries in other cities I've lived in. They certainly are beautiful and beautifully kept.
ReplyDeleteWhen travelling you see a lot of graveyards, and this one would take the cake for elaborate graves.
DeleteYou don't find too many modern cemeteries like that any more do you.
ReplyDeleteNo you don't, they sure spent a lot of money on their graves.
DeleteI love cemeteries, they are full of birds, and animals. Thanks Margaret.
ReplyDeleteThey are indeed, up there we had to becareful of snakes!
DeleteOh my! The cemetery is amazing. It is first class. I never ever thought I would say that about a resting place for the dead.
ReplyDeleteYou made me smile :)
DeleteNot often you see such an amazing sight.
What beautiful, crisp and clear photos, Margaret!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mildred.
DeleteMuy bonita, esa pequeña iglesia y muy interesante el cementerio.
ReplyDeleteBesos
Most interesting is that cemetery.
DeleteWauu.. really beautiful cemetery, very different we have here in Finland. I love to walk in cemetery in a foreign countries, and also in my country too.
ReplyDeleteYou never know what you will find in a cemetery on the graves, some are very interesting.
DeleteIt's an amazing cemetery. A true reflection of the early settlers in the area.
ReplyDeleteVery so true. We have a few like that in our local cemetery but nothing like the ones in the photos.
DeleteThese graves and mausoleums are very ornate and quite beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThey are and if you are ever up that way do call in and take a peek.
Deletebeautiful and interesting, so different than here in Finland.
ReplyDeleteThis cemetery looks very nicely kept ... always appreciated
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
