More of Quay Street, Rockhampton, Queensland

Criterion Hotel/Motel in Quay Street is a beautiful building which can be seen from the bridge across the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton.  It's not an easy building to photograph because there are trees behind me then the river so one can't take a whole photo of it.
The Hotel was built in 1899 to 1890.

Rockhampton Post Office on East Street. Built from 1892 to 1896

  1. The whole areas looks very stately and grand and The Giddy Goat seems not fit in!

  4. I don't mind the style of the building in the last photo. At least it sympathetic to the other most wonderful older buildings.

  7. The "Giddy Goat" appeals to me.
A few 4 XXXXX schooners and I would be quite at home.
    Cheers

  8. A friend and I stayed at a hotel near The Criterion, for one night, on our way back to Brisbane from Mackay, where we'd attended my brother's wedding. The hotel we stayed at was then known as "The Commercial"...I think it is now known as "The Heritage Hotel"...and is on the same street as The Criterion...looking out upon the Fitzroy Rivwer.

Two maiden sisters ran it at the time...I think they were also the owners of the hotel, or part of the family that owned it.

They both beautiful old buildings...fine reminders of days long gone.

  9. Some of the buildings hae an almost Italian look to them espcially with that brilliant sunshine and blue skies.

    1. Many Italians came to Australia as did Greeks long time ago.
Nearly always a blue sky up that way in winter.
