Went to visit inside the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Joseph's in Rockhampton when we were there in 2016, but alas it was closed on a Sunday!
Built in 1893 - 1899. The first official Mass was held in May 1862 in a Court House in Rockhampton.
The Primary School and below the Offices of the Diocese of Rockhampton. Queensland.
Yes it happens. After Mass it closed. Have come across many a church/Cathedral that's been closed on a Sunday, seems when church is over the doors are locked. Sometimes the churches are open in the week days if there is a school next door, I suspect this Cathedral maybe.
So much prettier than many modern glass and steel boxes. I do like older buildings, or even new buildings that are styled to look older. Bit odd for a church to be closed on a Sunday.
I prefer older buildings and I suppose that's why I seem to take more photos of the older buildings in preference to 'boxes'. Yes odd, but have come across the churches being closed on Sunday are Mass/Church service.
When I was young, the idea of a closed Catholic church would have been ridiculous. Now most of them are closed unless there is a scheduled event--- mass, weddings, etc. Don't like it. On the other hand, I rarely am near one anymore. I like your pictures of this lovely place.
Unfortunately due to the "twits of the can spraying mob, thieves and just plain feral vandals", churches do have closed doors unless a service or Mass is to be held. Donation boxes have a bad habit of "walking"! Disgraceful in this day and age of the so called "enlightened". Strange that people above are surprised at the "closed/locked" doors!!!!! I hope the cathedral is air conditioned?????????? Or has - well we won't know as it was locked - large ceiling fans! Maybe an open air cathedral like that previous one you showed would be more appropriate.........at least people would be able to identify the vandals and thieves. Also according to reports, "Rocky" has a pretty big crime rate unfortunately. Great photos on this northern odyssey (2016) report. Cheers Colin
Sad though Colin how you can't go and pray when you want to. Yes, understand why in some areas churches are locked, such a pity people can't respect other peoples property.
Lol Lee, could have run out of customers :) Strange though that it was closed/locked. Gone are the days if you wanted to go into a church to pray - have to choose the right city or town it seems.
i love the photos Margaret. beautiful buildings. i remember when you could walk into any church just to sit and pray. perhaps it was under repair or something. happy birthday for today, i hope you did something nice xxx
I remember that as well F, and it's a bit hard to be brought up the way we were and then these days the church does are closed unless in use. Thanks re Birthday, we as a family and friends went out to dinner :)
What magnificent architecture. It would have been nice to see the interior.
ReplyDeleteWould have loved to seen inside - oh well who knows maybe there might be a next time when the doors are open and I can wander in.
DeleteI like the first photo. Interesting angle.
ReplyDeletelooking above Andy, maybe I thought it I looked up the doors might just open :)
DeleteLas imagenes de la catedral son fantasticas, Margaret!
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo.
Thank you Jordi - it's a lovely Cathedral that one can see for along time from the road before you actually get to it.
DeleteChurch closed on Sunday: That's a first:)

A church closed on a Sunday seems all wrong. Like River, I am a fan of older buildings. And suspect they will outlast a lot of modern monstrosities.
ReplyDeleteIt does seem totally wrong, but today's people are not all trustworthy to not damage or steal other peoples property!

ReplyDeleteA pity it was closed. It is interesting the architecture of the facade and sure that its interior is equally beautiful.
ReplyDeleteKisses
Shame it was closed, but that's how it is these days.
DeleteI'm sure inside it's beautiful.
That's not good for business
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not Adam.

Renovations, I hope. Great photos, anyway.
ReplyDeleteNo, not renovations Martin. Often in travels the churches are locked these days.
DeleteThe steeples look magnificent against those skies.
ReplyDeleteThey do, and always hard to fit into a photo.
DeleteBeautiful architecture.. I visited St. Pauls Cathedral in Salisbury, UK.. I was completely blown away by the beauty..
ReplyDeleteThere certainly are some beautiful and expensive looking Cathedrals about in this world. Must look that one up on the net.
DeletePity it was closed as it would be wonderful to see inside. It is an impressive cathedral.
ReplyDeleteWell if there is a next time I will go when church is on, then maybe I might get a photo, if there is a next time.
DeleteBeautiful Architecture but too bad closed on a Sunday !
ReplyDeleteI found it odd to be closed on a Sunday of all days..
DeleteIt looks magnificient
ReplyDeleteIt does, it's rather large.
DeleteIt looks like so nice, it's the sun days, ha ha.
ReplyDeletelol Bob..:)
