The 1st house is somewhat how many Queensland houses are built or were and a few still are.
Some are not filled in down stairs so therefore are stilt houses. Being stilt houses it lets the air flow through on the hot summer days, the veranda's to sit outside in shelter to eat on the balcony with the partitions helping to keep the sun out.
The remainder of the houses are of some around the area in Hervey Bay in Queensland, Winter 2016.
A few shops opposite the beach. There are no high rise buildings along the beach!
Stilt houses are not common here because we have completely differnt climate but i like them
ReplyDeleteNot necessary to have stilt houses in many countries Gosia I should imagine, but in the tropics they are ideal.
DeleteAre beautiful these houses, especially the one of the first and second image.
ReplyDeleteKisses
They are nice, lucky I had my camera to take them.
DeleteMy partner's uncle still lives in a 'Queenslander' and swears the the breeze which flows under the house is better than any air conditioner.
ReplyDeleteI reckon he's right about the breeze keeping the house cooler in summer, especially if blowing the right way.
DeleteI like the old Queenslanders. It's become a trend to restore them in Brisbane and there are some real beauties.
ReplyDeleteThat's why there are so many nice ones about then.
DeleteWe have an area here in Launceston where the old houses are being restored and they do look good - must wander out and take a photo sometime.
Some nice houses indeed
ReplyDeleteThey are Jo-Anne, there are some beautifully kept homes in Australia, just a few not so good.
DeleteThat subway on the exterior doesn't look much different from ones around here. One of the few chains around here that build almost anywhere though. Mcdonalds, burger king, etc usually make a standalone restaurant, but Subway will just take up one place in a center.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct about Subway and the others - the same down here.
DeleteI enjoy seeing part of your world. Fascinating!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mildred.
DeleteThe Queenslanders are great houses, and unlike now, they were built for the climate. That's a real beauty in your photo.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea those Queenslanders, they usually look lovely and are well kept, just a few that aren't.
DeleteThe one in the photo was taken near the Rockhampton Zoo.
Most of the newer homes near the ocean around here seem to be built with tidal waves in mind... Unless they're up on a hill or cliff.
ReplyDeleteWise move then if up higher near the sea of sea level incase of large waves.
DeleteNothing like a good old "Queenslander" in the summer months.
ReplyDeleteSome in Brisbane have been done up magnificently without losing
any of their charm or the cooling breezes under them.
Many of the homes in the street where I lived prior to moving
to Terrigal (which is paradise! - couldn't help that) were the
good old fashioned Queenslanders and they were so well looked after.
Funny to see the "mansion" under the Queenslander but it looks great.
Might have a bigger electricity quarterly bill - ha ha.
Cheers
Colin
I read somewhere some time ago why the Queenslander was designed and it wasn't for the air under either from memory.
DeleteI should imagine the larger house as in 2nd photo might have a larger cooling account.
Designed that way to keep the snakes out is what I heard, but probably also to keep out the annual floodwaters.
DeleteSounds good for both River.
DeleteThese pictures are well composed, as always. Who cuts their meat thinner, a Subway in Queensland or in San Francisco?
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteHaving never been in San Francisco I wouldn't know who cuts their meat the thinnest. Subway here in my city the meat is not too thin though.
"Tara by the Bay"....the spirit of Scarlett O'Hara lingers! :)
ReplyDeleteThe wonderful old Queenslanders have a style unique unto them. I love them.
Like those Queenslanders too :)
DeleteSubway here in KL in boring !
ReplyDeleteReally, they are ok here.
Deletedelightful houses indeed!
ReplyDeletesitting in balcony in airy summers must be joy to soul for sure.
thank you you shared these photos with your description dear Margaret , it is serene unlike city so much peace
You are welcome baili.
DeleteI have wonderful memories of those 'stilt' houses. When we lived in Brisbane, friends of ours with a toddler the same age as my T lived in the upstairs left half of one of those houses, it had been divided into two apartments. Huge rooms, with polished floorboards and every room opened onto a veranda. We visited often so the kids could play together. Looking around now, I'm sure my entire flat would have fit into their living room, and their bedrooms weren't much smaller. So incredibly spacious and cool too.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting River, the look large the stilt houses..
DeleteSounds like you enjoyed the house :)
Wow, you too have a SUBWAY?
ReplyDeleteYes we do, they are in large enough towns and of course cities.
DeleteI like the first one. It is a classic.
ReplyDeleteWell kept that one.
DeleteGood morning!
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous houses. One more beautiful than the other.
Was reading your profile. We have something in common.... the Outlander books!! Read them all. And saw the series on tv. Next season is starting in September 2017.
Regards
Wow! Outlander, can't beat it so fabulous. I too have read the books, watched the series....waiting patiently for Season 3 and not sure when it will be aired in Australia, might have to get it on iTunes :)
DeleteI like these houses, they looks so South-styles.
ReplyDeleteAnd the nature looks also wonderful, palm trees are lovely.
Many palm trees there they grow well.
DeleteThe homes are very impressive.
ReplyDeleteThey sure are lovely.
DeleteGorgeous houses.. I miss the veranda here in the US...
ReplyDeleteThey are a great thing the veranda, handy at times
DeleteGreat homes and sounds a sensible idea to build them on stilts too ...
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
