The mud flats are always left out of Cairns publicity material but even if was a pristine sandy beach, there would be something in the sea that would eat you or sting you.
Oh yes they sure are. The tide is usually a big one though. Always stingers in the sea, depends on how warm the winter is...and of course there are always sharks in many areas too.
i love cairns. my friend and my daughter in law's mum live there. the fact that you can't swim in the ocean is a bit of a worry but it's only at certain times of the year i think. the scenery and surrounding areas are gorgeous, especially up in the mountains, or should that be table lands? great photos as usual Margaret, thank you for sharing :)
Winter time you can swim between the flags on the beaches for they are patrolled - summer time they would be patrolled too and there would be nets in those areas. The Tablelands are up high and it's rather flat up there when you get to the top - as in Atherton Tablelands.
If I recall the "smelly" mudflats are not exposed for all that long. The tides up there are generous in that aspect. Anyhow it is easy food for the sea bird population. Not yet "IN RESIDENCE" - ha ha. Colin
I like the look of that apartment block, although I'm not a fan of them usually, this one has shape and balconies, far better that the inner city "prison" blocks more commonly seen in low income areas. I remember playing in the 'mud flat' area next to the sandy part on Port Pirie beach, the mud there was black.
The first photo is great though there is a lot of the mud, which is not nice. You had exiting time to watching the helicopter, it's always nice to see it close.
I came from Sandra's blog and am in love with what I see. Those little ones are adorable, and your photos show places I only dream of visiting. I loved the beaches and water. It's so cold here in the states, I want to be there. You take excellent photos, and I'll be back to visit again and again.

Interesting images and country, I'm sure. Anyway, warmer than it is now where I live, Romania - better known as Dracula's country. We are now under huge mountains of snow and freezing temperatures. So no matter how bad the flatland smells, it's warm.

There is life in most things by the sea and even in dry beds in our country, because when it rains if you recall, things come to life.

Yes, Port Pirie does have very uninviting black mudflats, as a visitor there one wouldn't tread on it at all, well we didn't.

Took a while to work out what the helicopter was doing actually, why is was there but it was soon figured out.
