Morris General Store at Swansea on the East Coast of Tasmania has been one for over 100 years.
It's in the main street, which is a busy one for the small population.
An IGA Supermarket is joined onto the store, then you go through the door to view so many things one could and can buy. There is another room which sells all kitchen ware, I had a great time looking. Wool is also sold along with needles, crochet hooks and patterns.
The store has been in the Morris family all of the years.
So interesting to see the place!
ReplyDeleteIt's different for us to see and also interesting.
DeleteA grand old lady of a building. I love kitchen and hardware stores - I can spend hours in them!
ReplyDeleteWhen we don't see these types of shops often it's really fun to see what is there.
Deleteit is very interesting place but so crowded
ReplyDeleteYes, it's crowded, the aisles are close together and packed with all kinds of things, one has to becareful not to knock things of the shelves.
DeleteWhoa, it looks more like an apartment or office building than a retail outlet. Could it have started out as a hotel?
ReplyDeleteNo, don't believe it was ever a hotel, more like a family home for the Morris family.
DeleteHere he spends hours quickly , so just look different items that exist in the store.
ReplyDeleteKisses
All kind of things, everything anyone would need for repairs of the home, garden..
DeleteJam-packed! It certainly looks huge. It must have drawn customers from a large area. I bet it was fun to look around.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed looking and people from all surrounding areas plus tourists...
Deleteyou rarely see general stores (at least in America) anymore. They have a really nice one the next city over from where I live but I can't think of a single other
ReplyDeleteA thing of the past then Adam.
DeleteYou don't see many of these general stores anymore - certainly not in cities.
ReplyDeleteThe two in Moree in the 1950's even sold things from saddles, bed linen to confectionery!!
I don't believe the one here in Swansea was ever a hotel - old hotels always had balconies.
Very interesting - things of the sometimes forgotten past.
Cheers
Colin
PS: Thankfully a lovely sunny day for us old Ex-PNGians to meet for a VERY LONG lunch.
I don't think the Morris store was even a Hotel, as you say, no verandah but once in while in Tasmania you will see a hotel with a verandah. I think this Morris store may have originally been the Morris families home.... these stores are few and far in between these days.
DeleteOh now this is really bringing back childhood memories. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh did it..things of the past that we like to remember :)
DeleteWe have a store near us called Gibson's, and they have aisles full of everything imaginable as well.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure many a place has one of those store, would be interesting to see the near you.
DeleteThis would be a fun place for my husband. He would look at EVERY thing!
ReplyDeleteTaking a little time away since our precious pet died.
See you soon. xo
Your husband would be there a long time to see all.
DeleteSo sorry about your cat...that's so sad.
Wow looks like a lot of stuff in there
ReplyDeleteYou would have to see it to believe it.
DeleteI remember the building but not what it was used for then. We stayed at a lovely motel overlooking the water, waking to the slap of waves and I think there was a nearby bird colony too.
ReplyDeleteI believe it's mostly been a store. The bird colony is still there but expanded, and could well of been in a different place back then.
DeleteA mixed business, still in business, run by the same family for 100 years.
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing in these times when everything changes so fast.
Truly amazing River...let's hope it lasts another 100 years.
DeleteRegards,
Margaret
Interesting...I wasn't expecting the interior to look like a warehouse even though the outside somewhat does. :)
ReplyDeleteMust be different up your way. Warehouses don't quite look like this one down here. The outside looks more like a house of old.
