The General Store at Swansea, Tasmania

Morris General Store at Swansea on the East Coast of Tasmania has been one for over 100 years.
It's in the main street, which is a busy one for the small population.
An IGA Supermarket is joined onto the store, then you go through the door to view so many things one could and can buy.  There is another room which sells all kitchen ware, I had a great time looking.  Wool is also sold along with needles, crochet hooks and patterns.
The store has been in the Morris family all of the years.

  1. A grand old lady of a building. I love kitchen and hardware stores - I can spend hours in them!

    1. When we don't see these types of shops often it's really fun to see what is there.

  3. Whoa, it looks more like an apartment or office building than a retail outlet. Could it have started out as a hotel?

    1. No, don't believe it was ever a hotel, more like a family home for the Morris family.

  5. Jam-packed! It certainly looks huge. It must have drawn customers from a large area. I bet it was fun to look around.

  6. you rarely see general stores (at least in America) anymore. They have a really nice one the next city over from where I live but I can't think of a single other

  7. You don't see many of these general stores anymore - certainly not in cities.
The two in Moree in the 1950's even sold things from saddles, bed linen to confectionery!!
I don't believe the one here in Swansea was ever a hotel - old hotels always had balconies.
Very interesting - things of the sometimes forgotten past.
    Cheers

    1. I don't think the Morris store was even a Hotel, as you say, no verandah but once in while in Tasmania you will see a hotel with a verandah. I think this Morris store may have originally been the Morris families home.... these stores are few and far in between these days.

  11. I remember the building but not what it was used for then. We stayed at a lovely motel overlooking the water, waking to the slap of waves and I think there was a nearby bird colony too.

    1. I believe it's mostly been a store. The bird colony is still there but expanded, and could well of been in a different place back then.

  12. A mixed business, still in business, run by the same family for 100 years.
That's amazing in these times when everything changes so fast.

  13. Interesting...I wasn't expecting the interior to look like a warehouse even though the outside somewhat does. :)

    1. Must be different up your way. Warehouses don't quite look like this one down here. The outside looks more like a house of old.
