It's good when travelling to seek out the Catholic Churches and take photos, go to Mass or whatever. St. Joseph's Cathedral in Rockhampton was built between 1893 and 1899. It's built with local sandstone and is in the Gothic style. The sanctuary was added later, completed in 1982. Next door is the Catholic School.

Beautiful church.
ReplyDeleteI think so too, Anne.
DeleteI have never sought out a Catholic church in my life.
ReplyDeleteI will forgive you, David.
DeleteThe church is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI think so too, Nicole.
DeleteThe church is absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Bill.
DeleteBeautiful photos of this church, Margaret.
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda.
DeleteWow, that is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Mary.
DeleteSt. Joseph's Cathedral is very beautiful. The sandstone suits the church very well. Take care.
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely church, Marit.
DeleteThank you.
That's a very beautiful church!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, but it was very dark in there, no light only what came through the stained glass windows, Angie.
DeleteGothic architecture might have been specifically designed for this purpose - towering, serious, long lasting and handsome.
ReplyDeleteDoes it stay cool in Rockhampton's summer?
It probably was, Hels and I rather like the Gothic style, we have a few houses built in the Gothic style here.
DeleteIt is a handsome church and I don't know how it goes there in the summer, but I'm sure the people manage. I should imagine with thick walls, hardly any windows apart from the glass stained ones sun/heat would be minimal. Could be a similar temperature in both winter and the wet season.
The architecture of these holy buildings is magnificent. Wonderful photos Margaret and always nice to see where it is on the map. I also love your autumn leaf background and that lovely flower at the bottom. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteThank you Denise. I was thinking about the autumn theme and thought perhaps it was a bit too overpowering, but I'll leave it there for awhile.
DeleteThe old churches are beautiful.
I Love These Wonderful Churches - And Those Gorgeous Stain Glass Windows , Yes Please
ReplyDeleteTravel On ,
Cheers
Thank you and I like them too. It was very dark in there however.
DeleteWhat a beautiful Church...lovely photographs (and thanks again for including the map)
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Thank you Jan. I always like to share a map of places far or short from home as it gives you an idea of where I am or have been.
DeleteThe church is very impressive for a town of that size. I'm sure it has good flow through ventilation for summer months. The external bell is interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely church with the school next door so it would get plenty of use during the week more so than some. I reckon the air would flow well in the summer, the building has thick walls and there are only the glass stained windows that let the light in. The people would be used to the weather in summer up there, Andrew.
DeleteI have been to Sunday Mass at this cathedral It was a High Mass and very ritual.
ReplyDeleteThe Archbishop of Brisbane was the celebrant and the Cathedral was standing room only for the latecomers!
After Mass there was BBQ - plenty of liquid refreshment also had a great meat BBQ.
Nothing like good Brahman steaks!
Cheers
Colin
PS: The " damn school bike "terrorists" are back to school on Tuesday !
I can hardly wait!!!
Those were they days, Colin. Good memories for you.
DeleteMore people went to Mass back then than they do now. I actually went to the Cathedral for another visit a few more times after taking these photos but the door was locked and that was even when the children were there next door at the school, another time the Cathedral was in use. I wanted to say a prayer or two and take photos with my camera on different settings to get a brighter more detailed photos. Wasn't meant to be.
Bella iglesia. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteThank you J.P.
DeleteThat's a very beautiful Cathedral. When I visit a new place I almost always look for a church to visit.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I always do and did do the same as you, make a beeline for the Catholic Church, many of them on top of a hill :)
DeleteMost old churches are very beautiful and this one is a fine example of craftsmanship.
ReplyDeleteHow correct you are R. Always gorgeous inside and some of them the same outside. All of it would be done by hand too with a few tools.
DeleteIt truly is a beautiful church--- and an interesting mix of materials, too. The wood ceilings are quite striking!
ReplyDeleteSaludos Cordiales.
The church is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the lovely photos, dear Margaret.
Warmest regards from Viola
