We came down a road which we have never been on at Sidmouth here in Northern Tasmania. Sidmouth is not that far from Launceston where I live. We saw many horses in the distance and wondered what was going on, we discovered rugs on the horses and they were all standing on gravel/dirt looking unhappy. Anyway upon further investigation the place is a boarding stable for horses. The reviews are not so good on Google. The owners of the boarding stables must be doing ok other wise they wouldn't be in business.
Wouldn't like to board my horse there is I had one or two. Took the shot with the phone out the window.
Omg!! They must be hot?? I probably would have stopped and complained!
ReplyDeletePoor things!
hugs
Donna
I don't believe they are hot Donna, rugs are for many things in the care of horses. Several people work there, as there were cars parked in a certain area for workers, so they are being taken care of.
DeleteWhy do they need rugs during the hot summer days there?
ReplyDeleteRugs are used to help protect the horses against flies, there are lightweight rugs and so on.
DeleteLovely Header!
ReplyDeleteThe horses definitelylook unhappy. Someone should complain at the local animal wellfare authority.
Thanks re header Duta. Yes the horses do look so unhappy. Apparently all is well there.
DeleteNo they don't look happy. Or comfortable. Which is awful.
ReplyDeleteI was a bit shocked when I saw them from a distance, but there is food there for them and water.
DeleteShots like these can be upsetting as the horses don't look happy, well they are upsetting for me and I am sure many others wouldn't like seeing these poor unhappy animals
ReplyDeleteYou are right Jo-Anne, it's not nice to see horses looking like that but when I reflect back I've seen many horses before standing like that as if looking miserable but they were ok.
DeleteIt looks very dry and parched - I think that they would be happier if they had a nice field of grass. We have horses here where I live roaming freely on our Common - they are out in all kinds of weather and don't need of blankets.
ReplyDeleteBlankets or horse rugs are used to help keep the flies off the horses, the ground looks like fine gravel or course sand, there is water there and food.
DeleteI grant you they don't look happy but could be asleep as horses do sleep standing up as well as lying down.
The coat of the horses protect them against the sun, wind and snow.
There are stables or boarding stables also here that have greenfields for the horses.
There is a serenity to it
ReplyDeleteTrue, peaceful as all is still. Horses could be sleeping.
DeleteIt would be nice if they were eating grass in a paddock.
ReplyDeleteYes it would Andrew, it's always good to see horses grazing in the green paddocks but not on that day.
DeleteThat's a real shame Margaret, I wouldn't want my horse there either if I had one.
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame but these horses are know doubt used to their inviroment.
DeleteI am sure that the owners of this stabling establishment know what they are doing
ReplyDeletefar more than people who wouldn't know the difference between a horse and a donkey !
I belonged as a young kid to pony clubs and our horses were covered - the covers do come off during the day,
Colin
I forgot to add.
DeleteThe horse blankets protect the horses from flies. Like humans we wave frantically at flies and horses and cattle swish their tails.
As for phoning the RSPCA they would be in favour of the blankets to give the horses peace and quiet!
Colin
You are right Colin. I have ridden horse on and off since I was about 9 years of age, had horses of my own in my early 20's on the farm and used to ride everyday at one time.
DeleteNo se no parecen bien cuidados. Pobres caballos. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteThank you JP. They don't look real happy but probably are ok, but on initial viewing of them it didn't look the best till further investigation, then I wasn't too worried.
DeleteI'm sure they would be happier if they had a field of grass.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
One would think so Jan, but they used to their surroundings.
DeleteThey don't look at all happy. Maybe an anonymous phone call to the RSPCA would help, they'd go out there and check on the animals at least to see if they had water and decent food. I wouldn't put a horse there if I had one.
ReplyDeleteThey have water and food R, plenty of it, there are people working there keeping the place clean. I think, well I know I'm used to seeing horses in green paddocks where as these horses are in a different type of inviroment and are used to it.
DeleteLove the earthiness of the place...
ReplyDeleteCertainlty has that about it Ashok.
DeleteThis is not fun for the horses, they should graze in a meadow.
ReplyDeleteGreetings Irma
I would be happier if they did Irma. This particular Stable doesn't do that but they may put the horses in a paddock of green grass as well.
DeleteThe way that humans treat animals is a tragedy and it makes you question the mentality of people who board their horses at places like this.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly can make us wonder about these humans at times. The Stables are clean and cared for and the rugs on the horses are there to help keep the flies away, they have food and water, the horses maybe asleep.
DeletePoor horses, they don't look happy.
ReplyDeleteThey don't look happy Maria, but I think they are asleep.
DeleteI am not a horse person, have only ridden a few times; but it's not at all uncommon for horses to be covered. I don't see anything sad about the picture. Looks like they have plenty of places to graze and probably are taken from paddock area out during the day when the blankets come off. My SIL who has won many awards with her horses covers her horses sometimes as well. Horses are very expensive to keep, and board. Somehow I can't imagine the owners of all those horses not speaking up if there was a problem. People and their horses are very close. But, I wonder about the review you saw on google.
ReplyDeleteSandy's Space
Well said Sandy. The reviews on Google, probably someone who wanted 5 star accommodation for their horses! Who knows!
DeleteThe horses certainly don't look happy.
ReplyDeleteIt's heartbreaking to see them like this.
Hugs and blessings, Margaret
They don't, but I think some are asleep.
DeleteMuy buena escena, amiga.
ReplyDeleteThank you..
DeleteI don't know the temperature and the humidity there. The summer rug seems to be made of light mesh fabric. Horses might be more comfortable than without it. They don't like the strong sunshine and horseflies.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have high humidity here in Tasmania, more a dry heat and it wasn't that hot on the day I took the photos, probably about 23degC which is just a nice temperature. I'm sure the light rugs would be to keep the flies away.
DeleteThere is nothing in this picture that suggests unhappy horses. I also wondered about the blankets, but if there are that many people there, it would be difficult for mistreatment to occur.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the horses are not mistreated, the rugs would be light one and are on to help keep the flies away, there was food and water and some of the horses look asleep.
Deleteit hurts when see beautiful creatures are treated unkindly but as i and you too knw that kindness is becoming rare in times of desperation and greed dear Margaret .
ReplyDeletehope situation has some hope for horses
hugs and best wishes !
I don't believe they are being treated unkindly Baili, it just looks like it when there is no green grass but there is food and water for them.
DeleteBella l' idea della pensione per i cavalli, peccato però che questi non mi sembrano per nulla felici.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, but I believe some are sleeping.
DeleteI feel sorry for the horses, I hope they are okay...
ReplyDeleteI'm told each and everyone is ok.
Manuel, I get what you are saying and rightly so. These horses are alright, some sleeping, the light rugs are there to keep the flies away and in summer as it's summer here now..they have food and water.
DeleteI don't think the horses look unhappy or neglected but they make a sad sight for me as I'm used to seeing them with plenty of space and grass. I'm sure there wouldn't be so many there if they weren't being cared for properly.
ReplyDeleteThe horse are ok Pauline, but do look a sad sight for me too but I know we are used to seeing horses with green grass and trough of water, but there is food and water there for them.
DeleteThat is a bit sad.
ReplyDeleteIt is when first seen Diane. Then reality sets in as to what is going on and why.
DeleteSeguro que los sacaran a dar paseos por los prados, se ven por los alrededores. Besos.
ReplyDeleteI expect that the horse would get plenty of exercise as it''s a very big area Teresa.
DeleteHello Margaret
ReplyDeleteSometimes hiking takes you to interesting places. While wandering, I also come across something I didn't expect.
I like watching horses, an elderly neighbor of mine had a horse, but that was a long time ago... Now, even living in the countryside, you rarely see horses.
Have a nice week!
Thank you. Gosh we often see horses grazing on our travels. We also like you see unexpected things.
Delete¡Pobres caballos! No parecen estar en el lugar adeucado, para ellos.
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo
No they don't, the seem to be standing there all unecessarily.
DeleteI hope they are all well cared for.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they are Hena, plenty of food there and water.
DeleteLots of horses in that boarding stable.
ReplyDeleteThe monthly bill for a boarding facility for horse can range between $400 to a $1000... depending on the services provided. A friend of mine is paying $500 a month.
I have no idea of the cost - thanks for telling me that, be similar to here I guess.
