Pelicans at Streaky Bay SA

The Australian pelican is a large waterbird of the family Pelecanidae, widespread on the inland and coastal waters of Australia and New Guinea, also in Fiji, parts of Indonesia and as a vagrant in New Zealand.

The photos were taken at Streaky Bay in South Australia from the caravan park.

    1. Never seen a brown one only on the internet and your blog.
Could be mixture, ours have black on them though, not brown.

  3. We once had a Pelican land on our shores in Northumberland and it decided to stay, but it was a very lonely bird.
I have seen Brown Pelicans in Florida diving for fish which was spectactular to see.

  5. The first time I saw pelicans flying just above the beach I thought they looked like 747's. Amazing. I like the second shot in which a pelicans seems to be suggesting that the gull would be a lot happier somewhere else.

The indignant look on that pelican standing says it all.

  7. Good shots of the pelicans.
I refer to them as "Eating Machines with wings".
Some are so tame they come right up and snatch off picnic
plates on the beach areas. Really beach picnic areas are
battlegrounds over food: People v's Sea Gulls v's Pelicans.
    Makes picnicing somewhat exciting.
    Cheers

    1. Can be a bit of a hazard with the two creatures wanting food, some of them are rather tame and wait till you give them something, a big mistake.

  12. They are wonderful birds the pelicans. I love them.

When we ran the cruising restaurant at Noosaville (on the Noosa River) back in the early 80s, one used to turn up every morning and every afternoon - at the same times. It would perch on a post on the jetty. It knew what time we started prepping in the restaurant and what time I opened the little fish and chip shop that was attached to the jetty. The shop was a stationary part of the floating/cruising restaurant; physically separate from the restaurant. He knew I was a big softy....I used to toss him a fillet or two of fish every day. How could I ignore him?? :)

    1. Lee - I reckon that they have top class Rolex watches somewhere attached to them. Down Terrigal way on the waterfront they arrive in "droves" for the 10.00 am and 4.00 pm feeding time for the tourists.
Quite a sight to see. Same at various other locations where they are feed at a certain time of the day. Amazingly as soon as the last fish has been consumed - off they go.
      Cheers

    2. Well you just ignore them sometimes, if you hadn't of feed them they would stay until you did..

  13. While they never seem to do much, they are great to watch when they are being fed. They really do fight for their share and I have seen a five minute battle over one fish which two birds had hold of.

  14. Those pelicans look exactly the same as the ones I've seen here in Adelaide, over in Fremantle, down at Mandurah, on Rottnest Island. Do you suppose they're all related? Cousins maybe? (*!*)
I do love them, wherever I see them.

  19. I have seen most of the world's pelicans, including the Australian Pelican, and they are all fascinating creatures. They are so well adapted to their aquatic lifestyle and I always find it interesting to observe their different techniques to capture food.
