The Australian pelican is a large waterbird of the family
Pelecanidae, widespread on the inland and coastal waters of Australia
and New Guinea, also in Fiji, parts of Indonesia and as a vagrant in New
Zealand.

The photos were taken at Streaky Bay in South Australia from the caravan park.
A stranger reading a novel at the beach.
What a life!
Pelicans look so big! I have never seen them in Nature.
ReplyDeleteThey are a rather large bird, and graceful as all birds are.
DeleteNice shots
ReplyDeleteI love pelicans. We have white and brown pelican hereabout...Yours look like a mixture of them.
Never seen a brown one only on the internet and your blog.
DeleteCould be mixture, ours have black on them though, not brown.
We once had a Pelican land on our shores in Northumberland and it decided to stay, but it was a very lonely bird.
ReplyDeleteI have seen Brown Pelicans in Florida diving for fish which was spectactular to see.
Poor thing would be lonely, and I wonder did it lose it's mate.
DeleteAustralia has many pelicans.
These beautiful Pelicans have such big beak. Great photo of the stranger reading a novel at the beach.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteI expect many people take a chair and sit their in the shade of the trees in summer and read a book..good place for it.
The first time I saw pelicans flying just above the beach I thought they looked like 747's. Amazing. I like the second shot in which a pelicans seems to be suggesting that the gull would be a lot happier somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, did you really :)
DeleteThe indignant look on that pelican standing says it all.
Love the pelicans. And reading on the beach sounds pretty blissful too.
ReplyDeleteWas very peaceful when we were there after the rain.
DeleteGood shots of the pelicans.
ReplyDeleteI refer to them as "Eating Machines with wings".
Some are so tame they come right up and snatch off picnic
plates on the beach areas. Really beach picnic areas are
battlegrounds over food: People v's Sea Gulls v's Pelicans.
Makes picnicing somewhat exciting.
Cheers
Colin
Can be a bit of a hazard with the two creatures wanting food, some of them are rather tame and wait till you give them something, a big mistake.
DeleteGreat pics, thank you for this
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome.
DeleteBrilliant photos Margaret, the Pelicans stole it for me.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bill.
DeleteIt's a beautiful bird. The man reading on the beach seems to be enjoying himself.
ReplyDeleteHe was well absorbed in his book for sure John.
DeleteNice and easy on the eyes this morning, as my daughter is chucking a spaz over the vacuuming
ReplyDeleteOh is she - well let's hope she well and truly over it now.
DeleteThey are wonderful birds the pelicans. I love them.
ReplyDeleteWhen we ran the cruising restaurant at Noosaville (on the Noosa River) back in the early 80s, one used to turn up every morning and every afternoon - at the same times. It would perch on a post on the jetty. It knew what time we started prepping in the restaurant and what time I opened the little fish and chip shop that was attached to the jetty. The shop was a stationary part of the floating/cruising restaurant; physically separate from the restaurant. He knew I was a big softy....I used to toss him a fillet or two of fish every day. How could I ignore him?? :)
Lee - I reckon that they have top class Rolex watches somewhere attached to them. Down Terrigal way on the waterfront they arrive in "droves" for the 10.00 am and 4.00 pm feeding time for the tourists.
DeleteQuite a sight to see. Same at various other locations where they are feed at a certain time of the day. Amazingly as soon as the last fish has been consumed - off they go.
Cheers
Colin
Well you just ignore them sometimes, if you hadn't of feed them they would stay until you did..
DeleteWhile they never seem to do much, they are great to watch when they are being fed. They really do fight for their share and I have seen a five minute battle over one fish which two birds had hold of.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen them fighting over food, would be interesting to watch.
Deletecool pelican
ReplyDeleteThey are cool.
DeleteThose pelicans look exactly the same as the ones I've seen here in Adelaide, over in Fremantle, down at Mandurah, on Rottnest Island. Do you suppose they're all related? Cousins maybe? (*!*)
ReplyDeleteI do love them, wherever I see them.
Well they could all be related as they do all get about.
Deletelovely big birds
ReplyDeleteThey are graceful for such large birds, but then all birds are graceful.
Deletethey look so beautiful and you captured them nice ,
ReplyDeletelast pic is the dreamy one ,sitting like this on the beach with fav book isn't a dream ?it is mine too
One day you might get to sit on a beach in the cool and read, you never know :)
DeleteI love watching pelicans in action.
ReplyDeleteThey are interesting and I often wonder what they are thinking.
DeleteThe pelicans is an impressive animal !
ReplyDeletePelicans are birds...they are beautiful as all birds are.
DeleteI have seen most of the world's pelicans, including the Australian Pelican, and they are all fascinating creatures. They are so well adapted to their aquatic lifestyle and I always find it interesting to observe their different techniques to capture food.
ReplyDeleteThey are very quick in catching their food as you know doubt know.
DeleteI love the pelican pictures. And reading a book on the beach....can life get any better?
ReplyDeleteGood life traveling about seeing and doing just what you see in the photos.
DeleteWhat a life indeed! The joy of reading in such a location!
ReplyDeleteI bet you wish you could do that sometimes :)
DeleteWhat beautiful and peaceful photos today Margaret.
ReplyDeleteThey say the sea is relaxing and I do believe it can be.
DeleteHello Margaret,
ReplyDeleteThat's great!! Fantastic to see so many pelicans along that water.
So special.
And a funny picture of the local director....haha....!!
Many greetings,
Marco
Yes, you could take that man reading in his chair as The Director :)
DeleteLovely to see these birds.
ReplyDeleteNow I love to sit in a chair and read a book - sometimes at home, sometimes by the lake when I accompany 'hubby' fishing ...
I hope whoever that guy was enjoyed his day!
All the best Jan
It's good that you enjoy similar to that man reading :)
Deletethese birds are beautiful i have never seen like them before ,
ReplyDeletereading beside the beach is a dream to me dear
One day your dream might come true, then you will remember this man sitting on a chair by the sea in Australia :)
DeleteI love to read by the sea.
ReplyDeletePelicans are strange birds. We have two varieties here, both different from yours.
Fantastic shots of the pelicans !! I love these beautiful creatures !!
