I posted a post about the Katherine River in November 2024 here, this time I'm doing the Katherine Gorge and there will be a few posts on the Gorge over time. The Gorge is a 13-gorge system that meanders around the Katherine River NT, Australia.
The highlight of the Katherine Gorge are its towering sandstone walls carved by the Katherine River over thousands of years. In recent years the town is known as Nitmiluk which is the Aboriginal name.
We took a cruise up the river a few years back and these photos are from then.
We all had to get out of the boat walk a little way up and get into another boat.
Awesome place!
ReplyDeleteIt sure is Anne.
DeleteYes Margaret, it looks perfectly blended in with the tree branch.
ReplyDeleteThey got out of the boat. And the crocodiles?
No crocodiles where we walked to get to the other boat, we were told to watch out for them. Didn't see any crocodiles in the water.
DeleteYou have seen a lot more of our country than I have. I would love to see Katherine Gorge but sadly don't travel well these days.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos. Thank you.
The Gorge was certainly worth the trip seeing we were up that way anyway. It is an amazing place.
DeleteI love your pictures. I think a short cruise up this river would be nice.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary, and it is really lovely.
DeleteSuch a lovely place!
ReplyDeleteIt sure is Angie.
DeleteThat's a nice tour boat. Never seen a crocodile and I don't expect I ever will. :)
ReplyDeleteBoth boats were lovely for cruising up the river. I guess you won't see a crocodile, I've seen several over the years and some of them a so big.
DeleteChe bella avventura in barca... Però il coccodrillo, aiuto che ansia
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed a lovely trip up the river. I wouldn't want to have a crocodile right in front of me, or beside or the back of me.
DeleteThe gorge is looking great. I like the texture of it.
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful gorge.
DeleteQuite an adventure. As you say far from home. Watch out for those crocodiles!
ReplyDeleteWe didn't see any big ones, only ones about the same size that's sunning it's self on the old tree log.
DeleteI like these photos, it is one of the many places I would like to visit
ReplyDeleteCertainly worth a visit Jo-Anne, and even in the winter it was pleasant.
DeletePicturesque - but not for swimming - yet idiots do!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCharlie/Charlotte Croc just says as he/she licks their lips - thanks very much
Cheers
Colin
Weather report - the Lord shines on Terrigal - 4 fine days in a row!!!!!!
I rather don't understand why people go swimming where crocodiles maybe, then they wonder why they get bitten, eaten or whatever.
DeleteWell 4 days in a row is good...can you make it 5?
Yep ! % days - mark it down as a miracle!!
DeleteColin
I will...
DeleteLovely photographs on your post, thank you.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
You are welcome Jan.
DeleteI would love to take one of those cruises one day, but I'm short so I wouldn't want a middle seat where I couldn't see everything.
ReplyDeleteWell I'm sure you would see from the middle seat, people in the middle were seeing everything, thank goodness, they looked out the front and to the side taking their photos. Worth a visit for sure, R.
DeleteBeautiful photos of a beautiful area. I love the NT
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely place there and the whole of the NT, so very different from where I live.
DeleteEs un lugar muy lindo que me gustaría conocer. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteMaybe one day you might get to visit, who knows.
DeleteThank you and same to you.
Lovely photos. We really enjoyed our cruise in the Katherine Gorge some years ago now.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Diane, it certainly is a lovely place and good on the water cruising up the river.
DeleteSounds like such an incredible trip!
ReplyDeleteThe photos are absolutely stunning, and spotting a croc on a tree limb—how amazing is that!
Happy Friday, Margaret!
Thank you Veronica. It is a beautiful place. We were surprised to see the crocodile sunning itself.
DeleteLoved your clicks
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ashok.
DeleteWhat a great place to go.
ReplyDeleteWell, we only see crocodiles in a zoo here.
I wish you a nice weekend.
Greetings Irma
I can understand that, and they need warmth the crocodiles, I remember we visited a Zoo up in the tropics of Australia and the pool the crocodiles were in was heated in the winter time!
DeleteGorgeous.
ReplyDeleteWhat I don't understand how the gorge system is so large and so complex, yet can retain all that water. Surely in Northern Territory water is always disappearing.
Apparently, the Gorge zig zags as of course does the Katherine River. The rainy season and a few springs within the gorge give enough water to last through the dry season, Hels. If there is too much water in the Katherine River it floods as did happen many years ago which is hard to believe and even harder to believe when seen, the bridge over the river is rather high yet when in full flood water goes above the bridge.
DeleteThe Katherine River is a 328 km stretch of fresh water.
Water doesn't always disappear in the NT. There is water underground in many places and this is often the water that is drunk, bore water, some of it is nice and some doesn't taste too at all. Many so called rivers are bare of water and there is mostly just sand, some have rocks, but when the wet season comes water flows well.
It would be fun to go on a boat ride through there. Crocodiles are extraordinary creatures. I would enjoy seeing one in the wild. Great photos Margaret and thanks again for the map. My geography is improving and I appreciate that too. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteWe enjoyed the boat ride, Denise and the guide was excellent.
DeleteThey are amazing creatures and have been around for so long and not changed.
You are welcome Denise.

ReplyDeleteYes the crocodile can be seen easily
The sight must be scary from close naturally
Always a bit daunting to see a crocodile up really close which we have done, Baili.
DeleteWow what a cruise😍I enjoyed watching💖And that crocodille in the tree amazing😍
ReplyDeleteThank you Anita. We were surprised to see that smallish crocodile too.
DeleteWhat an incredible place to explore! The Katherine Gorge, with its stunning sandstone walls and natural beauty, must have been a breathtaking experience. The addition of the small crocodile on the tree limb is such a unique touch! It’s great to hear you’ll be sharing more about the Gorge over time—I'm looking forward to seeing more of your photos and learning about this magnificent part of Australia.
ReplyDeleteI invite you to read my new blog post: melodyjacob.com. Have a lovely week ahead.
