Katherine Gorge

I posted a post about the Katherine River in November 2024 here, this time I'm doing the Katherine Gorge and there will be a few posts on the Gorge over time.  The Gorge is a 13-gorge system that meanders around the Katherine River NT, Australia.

The highlight of the Katherine Gorge are its towering sandstone walls carved by the Katherine River over thousands of years.  In recent years the town is known as Nitmiluk which is the Aboriginal name.

We took a cruise up the river a few years back and these photos are from then.

A small crocodile on the tree limb, if you enlarge the photo you will see it easily.

We all had to get out of the boat walk a little way up and get into another boat.

You can see below that Katherine is a very long way from home.

  1. Yes Margaret, it looks perfectly blended in with the tree branch.
They got out of the boat. And the crocodiles?

    1. No crocodiles where we walked to get to the other boat, we were told to watch out for them. Didn't see any crocodiles in the water.

  2. You have seen a lot more of our country than I have. I would love to see Katherine Gorge but sadly don't travel well these days.

    1. Both boats were lovely for cruising up the river. I guess you won't see a crocodile, I've seen several over the years and some of them a so big.

    1. It was indeed a lovely trip up the river. I wouldn't want to have a crocodile right in front of me, or beside or the back of me.

    1. I rather don't understand why people go swimming where crocodiles maybe, then they wonder why they get bitten, eaten or whatever.
Well 4 days in a row is good...can you make it 5?

    2. Yep ! % days - mark it down as a miracle!!

  11. I would love to take one of those cruises one day, but I'm short so I wouldn't want a middle seat where I couldn't see everything.

    1. Well I'm sure you would see from the middle seat, people in the middle were seeing everything, thank goodness, they looked out the front and to the side taking their photos. Worth a visit for sure, R.

  17. Gorgeous.
What I don't understand how the gorge system is so large and so complex, yet can retain all that water. Surely in Northern Territory water is always disappearing.

    1. Apparently, the Gorge zig zags as of course does the Katherine River. The rainy season and a few springs within the gorge give enough water to last through the dry season, Hels. If there is too much water in the Katherine River it floods as did happen many years ago which is hard to believe and even harder to believe when seen, the bridge over the river is rather high yet when in full flood water goes above the bridge.
The Katherine River is a 328 km stretch of fresh water.
Water doesn't always disappear in the NT. There is water underground in many places and this is often the water that is drunk, bore water, some of it is nice and some doesn't taste too at all. Many so called rivers are bare of water and there is mostly just sand, some have rocks, but when the wet season comes water flows well.
