The Murray River, also known as The Mighty Murray. Mildura is in the northern area of the State of Victoria. Mildura is known for growing citrus fruit especially oranges, wine and supply 80% of grapes to the State of Victoria. You can take a ride on steamboats, hire a boat house to 'do' part of the Murray River if you wish. It's 1,092 kms (678m mile) from Launceston where we live. It takes 18 hours and 22 minutes as we have to go across the sea, Bass Strait then drive there.
We took our car on the ship (ferry) in 2003, stayed in motels each night.
I'm enjoying being reminded of what I've seen with wonderful memories.
The camera I used was a Samsung Digimax 350SE and I had the date set to come onto the photos, some photos I've taken the date off. It was about this time that I became interested in photography.

The George Chaffey Bridge in the distance which was opened in 1985. George and his brother founded the irrigation colonies in the Mildura area, they were Canadian.
I recall that we brought some beautiful oranges from this place along the road from Mildura.

DeleteSome of the fish you can catch are as follows - Trout, Golden Perch, Silver Perch, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Catfish, and the occasional Trout Cod.
My brother would totally love fishing there!

ReplyDeleteWater seems to make one feel relaxed EC. Be nice living on a houseboat on the Murray as long as the weather stayed fairly calm. As we travelled by round along parts of the Murray we would often see houseboats.
DeleteThroughout the 50s and early 60s, all holidays in my family went no further north than the state border. So I have very fond memories of Mildura and Swan Hill.

Prosperous area - sheep, cattle, orchards and tourism - the river boats for hire etc.
Also very much into the horse and trotting racing scene. Trialing young horses
in that area and then if good a trip of Melbourne or Adelaide for a plunge.
Ah yes - many a good-un from that part of Australia.

DeleteWe have had plenty of opportunities to go on a steamboat from there and other places where the steamboats leave from, but we were always in a hurry to go further north to warmer climate in the winter.
We stayed in Mildura on our way to and from Broken Hill. I quite liked the town, our motel room was nice and there was quite a bit to see in the area. Travelling north from Mildura we saw a roadside stand offering free oranges.

ReplyDeleteYou might, the last big Murray Cod was caught in 1902. The Murray Cod is Australia's largest freshwater fish. The biggest recorded was 1.8m long and weighed 113kg! It'd deemed to be between 76 and 144 years old.

DeleteMildura is a place I always wanted to visit but never did get there. I enjoyed a TV cooking show with an Italian Chef who lived and worked in Mildura. Always wanted to go after that.
