Old digital photos. I really can't recall my first digital camera certainly had one in 1998 as the photos below were taken with it. I somehow remember having an earlier camera with the resolution so small and nothing good to store the photos on only floppy discs - remember those?
The Launceston City Mall has changed over the years and was the first Mall in Australia in the 1970's.
These days the Mall in near empty of retail businesses and nothing like in the past. We certainly don't have big shopping centres here in Launceston, it's just the times, buying online and so forth due to the decline.
The first photo is of the Quadrant Mall up around the corner from the Brisbane Mall.

Lovely shots. I am very very grateful to digital photography. I can remember saving up to have films developed and being disappointed with the way some of them came out. Or didn't come out.
ReplyDeleteOh I remember those days of film - bought a good camera not long before digital came in, then that camera became useless to a degree because I wanted this new technology.
DeleteWas expensive at times with film for the reason you mention.
I got my first digital camera in 1998. It was a kodak and 1.3 megapixels. How times and technology changed in the years.

ReplyDeleteThe Mall is a bit more upmarket these days but unfortunately
not so safe now at night. Plenty of police patrols, but Covid
I guess has stopped a lot of that "tommy-rot".
It would be interesting to know how the very upmarket mall restaurants
have fared with the lockdown. I had a mate who was the night manager
at one of the top ones......up near Myers and the Casino end.

DeleteThat's interesting. I just had a look on Street View but I am not sure when the images there were taken, but it now looks so wide open and sterile compared to back in 1998.
ReplyDeleteI've only seen the Brisbane Street Mall on Street View like you and I'm not impressed and agree with you. Would say Street View is fairly new as Birchalls (the shop) has been vacant for awhile but now made into an arcade so I'm told. In the Street View I saw Birchalls was closed.

That mall area did look festive and well people many years ago. Sorry to read that the mall is now nearly empty of retail businesses, which is unfortunate for many especially the shop owners.
ReplyDeleteThe people that own the shops in the Mall put the rent up in many cases so the established shops there won't pay the high rent as it obviously doesn't pay them to.
DeleteI know many who still love film. I still love it, but I wouldn't go back to it. Being able to shoot as many pictures as I want, being able to have a world class darkroom in my computer, and so on... We've come a long way since those early digital cameras. Phones take pictures now that most people would never manage with basic film cameras.

ReplyDeleteI suspect that large shopping malls will soon be but a memory, but perhaps small specialty stores will make a comeback. I hope so.

Always good to look back on our old photos, and thank goodness it's easier these days to get a better photo with digital being able to see it immediately.

DeleteNice photos that bring us closer to Launceston, it is these hard times of pandemic we have realized that the small shops, the neighborhood shops, have always been there, to help us and protect us when everything was closed, still conferring the risk them, so they have my respect and admiration, I have nothing against the big centers, but we have to help the small trade.

Always good to have small shops and to patronise them when possible, so many of the smaller shops will go out of their way to help the customer.

I have 2 old cameras which I no longer use. Beautiful street view and the nicely decorated shopping area.
