We visited this area is 2016, and last year 2017 and saw such difference, buildings, pontoons and wharf's missing.
The first photo is as normal before the cyclone a 2016 photo.
As you scroll down the photos you will see things missing and apparently is mostly an insurance holdup as to why not all has been replaced.
You will also notice how the leaves have been taken off some of the palms and on that island.
Down on the waterfront these two photos are of the same building where one books to go on a cruise or to the islands.
It's not often you see a boat parked on the side of the road! Men were working on it so we presume it was taken there by the cyclone.
Oh...the Caribbean really paid Nature in 2017. I can't believe how lucky Tampa was, hit by a cat 3. Our little house didn't have a single major limb on the roof when it was over.
ReplyDeleteYou your family and house extremely lucky with the cyclone that pasted your way, it's odd how the path of a cyclone can be so devastating in some areas and not in other areas in the same town - but that's cyclones and such.
DeleteYou wonder whether insurance will cover all the damage, and sadly how soon is it going to be before another cyclone devastates the same area.
ReplyDeleteHopefully another cyclone won't come that way for years, might get strong winds and I believe that houses now have to be as cyclone proof as they can when built so that might help.
DeleteI guess some people might only partly insure, and insurance companies often try to get out of 'things', that's a well known fact.
Hello Margaret,
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely place.
Great that view over the water. Wonderful.
Greetings, Marco
'Tis very pretty there, let's hope another cyclone doesn't rear it's ugly head there or anywhere along the coast.
Deleteit is sad issue with the insurance.. such a lovely place..
ReplyDeleteIt is sad, it's like any insurance, you never know when you might just happen to need it.
DeleteInsurance issues are common. And add to the pain for those affected. I hope that rebuilding can be done. Soon.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope it can be rebuilt. Some don't have insurance due to cost so they take the risk then some of them can't afford to rebuild/mend their property.
DeleteWhat a force the wind was to move a boat that size. It looks like there's still much work to be done before everything is put back right.
ReplyDeleteAmazing that boat, we came around the corner was rather amused at first until we realised what had happened, there were people there working on the boat.
DeleteThis looks like a tropical slice of paradise to me after days on end of cold hard rain!
ReplyDeleteIt is tropical and many people go to the islands for a holiday.
DeleteWhat a powerful storm destroyed much.
ReplyDeleteIt knows no bounds.
DeleteA big difference from picture to picture.
ReplyDeleteThat was a lovely place before the storm.
Beautiful place with a lovely coloured sea, it will all look good once again in the future until another cyclone, hopefully that won't happen at Airlie Beach area.
DeleteSure was savage that cyclone.........cyclones don't take prisoners.
ReplyDeleteJust bloody devastation and insurance for cyclone prone areas is
really high, plus ALL THE SMALL PRINT!!!!!
I note on the weather today that you in Tassie are in for a bit of a
scorcher.......are you sure Tasmania hasn't been floated up into the
tropics?????????????
Great photos and description of the area, Margaret.
Cheers
Colin
Ha! We often have a 'scorches' here in the north of the island, alas, only the States Capitol is put on the news as in weather.
DeleteSuch a nice place---A shame that the damage was done.
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame and it will be sometime before all is back to normal there.
DeleteThe Main Street is ok and many houses are too but some are not.
Just awful. It certainly suffered badly and hopefully never will again.
ReplyDeleteWe hope never again Andrew.
DeleteSo much wreckage still to be repaired. I hope it looks much better this time next year.
ReplyDeleteSo do I, takes a long time to recover.
DeleteIt is a shame that people are still trying to get their homes and businesses back to normal. The insurance companies are so inconsiderate .
ReplyDeleteInsurance companies are inconsiderate however, we don't know what goes on behind the scenes - I expect they try to get out of it or for a small part of it - things do take time but it's hard when it's your home or business.
DeleteBad news, such a beautiful place.
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely place with hills beaches and such.
DeleteThey do have a lot of cyclones I was there a few years ago and we left left just before the cyclone hit but that was not as bad as this last one.
ReplyDeleteMerle..........
Thank goodness those cyclones up there often go out to sea instead of doing all the damage on land - unfortunatey this time is did damage.
DeleteYou were lucky that it happened after you left.
It has been badly destroyed.
ReplyDeleteBut I can see you have a beautiful summer there. We have gray and it's always raining. Normally here should be snow already.
My very late Happy New Year -greetings to you.
Thanks for the New Years greeting.
DeleteThose photos were in winter, on our winter holiday - i know it looks like summer though :)
So much damage. You really have to feel for all those caught up in Cyclone Debbie. What a traumatic experience to live through.
ReplyDeleteBe awful to listen to,. Recall going to the museum in Darwin several years ago and hearing the sound of their cyclone some years back, dreadful sound.
DeleteThe damages looks really bad
ReplyDeleteDamage was bad unfortunately in many areas.
DeleteIt's always so sad when you see damage like this ...
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
It is Jan, people's houses too - and we wonder where they live, and that goes for anyone.
Deleteoh this is quite a difference in before after photos ,
ReplyDeletecyclone have blown the palms away ruthlessly
this sad though in spite of all the advancement we humans can't defeat the nature
What you say is so very true - we will never beat nature totally.
