Bribie Island is about 1 and half hour drive north of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. There are approximately 20,000 permanent residents and up to additional 1,100 people at any one time visit the Island.
Lovely beaches, a few having shallow waters, good weather, wildlife, surfing and fishing attract people there in the winter in truth anytime of the year. We've been there a few times just on day trips from the Sunshine Coast when on holidays.
The Island is 34 km long and 8 km wide.
There is a National Park and Recreational Centre, where you will find Kangaroos, Wallabies, Emus, various Snake species, green tree Frogs, Dingos can often be seen venturing from the National Park into the surrounding suburbs.
There is a story about a man called Josh Taylor who was at a beach campground on Bribie Island when he fell into a hole that had been reportedly dug to roast a pig. Mr. Taylor was airlifted to hospital shortly after the incident but succumbed to his injuries, which means he died.
He fell into the hole when he stumbled and overbalanced as he got out of a chair, with his flailing arms bringing down it's walls on top on him. He was buried headfirst, with his ankles only barely visible to the rescuers, who tried to pull him out after their attempts to dig him out failed. This sad event happened in 2023.
Bribie Island has no cemetery; however, two people have been buried on the Island one back in 1920 and the other in 1935.

ReplyDeleteApparently however there is a Memorial in the northern part of the Island, but I didn't see any graves as such...a place for ashes, yes.

ReplyDeleteHardly any one there on that day Hels, weather wasn't the best, not windy but it was cloudy. I believe it gets very busy on the Island in school holidays.

DeleteI haven't been there but a friend's sister used to live there and it sounded idyllic, although maybe not so nice in the summer weather.

DeleteGreat place and has a good little pub with accommodation.
ReplyDeleteI have stayed there on quite a few occasions with mates from
Brisbane and I did live not that far away in Caloundra for about 4 years.
In summer the place is PACKED with campers.
I never saw any dingoes there - will the 4 legged variety!

PS: Lovely sunny day here and the beaches here are getting packed.
The expensive cafes/restaurants - (exorberent) with extra fees attached if you use a card.
I don't know how they get away with it.

DeleteIf you turn left on the beach and walk the Caloundra way, you can see in the distance, there is the nudist area!!! ha ha.

I see, a nudist beach, we walked that way at the times but no one there, maybe we frightened them away on that cloudy day, Colin. Well you would know more than I would re Bribie Island and we didn't see any Dingoes there either, they never came out of the bush.

DeleteI've been there, but long ago in February 1975, we lived in Brisbane at the time and took a day trip with friends, the beach was quite crowded and one unfortunate young man was stung by a blue ring octopus and the ambulance was called. It was my daughter's second birthday and the very next day her brother was born.

Yes a tragic story of Mr. Taylor and I wonder had he been drinking alcohol that made him a bit tipsy.
DeleteI've only ever been to Bribie Island once...back in the 60s. I don't know why I never visited again...I was more a Sunshine Coast person...and lived there, also, for a few years. :)
