The Cathedral was designed by Monsignor Hawes (Priest and Architect), who arrived in Geraldton as a parish priest in 1915 - the building is generally regarded as one of his finest works.
The foundation stone was laid in 1916 and the building completed in 1938.
The sun was totally in the wrong place, inside the Cathedral it was so very dark.
Great photos of the cathedral. The outside is very picturesque. I have seen it from the outside before but not the inside and hadn't guessed it would have such unusual décor within.
ReplyDeleteWould never imagine what it looked inside because of the outside.
DeleteI remember the time before last I went in the side door..well I thought I did.
wow
ReplyDeleteI didn't expect those colors inside. Pretty cool.
I did because I had been in there before, and I wasn't surprised the first time either after having visited a previous church by the architect.
DeleteI love the outside of the church.
ReplyDeleteIt's a little different to others I have seen.
DeleteThe outside is sublime. Not so keen on the inside.. it looks like Manchester United were involved in the decor (the colours).
ReplyDeleteLol...well if it's same or similar colours I can understand your thinking :)
DeleteSUCH a different interior.
ReplyDeleteThe outside has a lot of charm. Still thinking about the inside...
Takes some getting used to does the inside.
DeleteMargaret I agree with others it looks great outside but inside I was completely suprised. So simple and different from others churches
ReplyDeleteVery different from others. Makes it more unique.
DeleteIn spite of that inside do not had sufficient clarity ,he found the solution to the problem.
ReplyDeleteKisses
It's of different colours than we are used to.
DeleteQuite impressive and it MUST have a bishop in charge to be referred to as a Cathedral. Geraldton has had 8 bishops - I just looked the Cathedral up on google for more information - Bishop Justin Bianchini DD is the present bishop. This bloke has an interesting family background - building trade. Maybe this Bishop had the new looking paint interior job done???
ReplyDeletePossibily the building trade links of sunsequent bishops was maintained?
Margaret you have gone Geraldton proud with you reports and photos.
Ah t'was a great night in Perth last night.
Cheers
Colin
Ah !!! "Gone is supposed to be DONE Geraldton proud".
DeleteColin "Francis Xavier" Christopher Huggins.
Yep that's the full name!!!
Does this "F X" mean I get a Manchester United Guernsey???
Colin
You might be interested to know about the architect, you will find another of my posts on Mullewa WA where the priest/architect built another church..

A lot of controversy surrounded this priest, John Hawes.
It is most unusual to have a priest who iss also an architect. The cathedral is very attractive with an unusual interior.
ReplyDeleteVery different Rosemary. I expect to get their churches built many priests way back helped in building.
DeleteWonderful images of this wonderful church. I was really surprised by the interior, as well!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Inside very different and not expected.
DeleteThe exterior is absolutely fabulous, but I don't like the striped interior. Too hard on the eyes.
ReplyDeleteProbably that's why it was so dark inside - but the orange sure shone out.
DeleteVery like the ones in France but inside is a bit of a surprise, very different but uplifting.
ReplyDeleteMerle..........
Unique in a way I guess Merle.
DeleteThey sure don't make solid buildings like that anymore.
ReplyDeleteI don't reckon they do either.
DeleteWhat a magnificent structure! I love all the details!
ReplyDeleteIt's gives the impression it's larger than it is.
DeleteSchöne Kirche mit einen sehr schönen Eingang. Schöne Bilder vom inneren.

Noke
Thank you.
DeleteI like the orange and white stripes and the grey and white on the wall. Very catchy. And I love your header!
ReplyDeleteThanks regarding the header. Took the photo this time last year at a lavender farm.
DeleteInside the Cathedral is certainly different.
The stripes on the interior are certainly dramatic. I've never seen anything like it in a church before.
ReplyDeleteI've just seen two interiors similar and both by the same Architect..which cause a lot of controversy.
DeleteI repeat myself...but what a wonderful town Geraldton is...I never ever thought it was this amazing. Thanks for opening my eyes, Margaret. :)
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome..
DeleteGreat photos
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteHello Margaret,
