Evandale Penny Farthing Race, Tasmania, Australia

The Penny Farthing annual race was held at Evandale on the weekend.  This Historic village is not far from the Launceston Airport. Visitors come from many parts of Australia to compete.
The photos of the race were borrowed, but the remaining photos are mine.

This old cottage was just about falling down some years ago, it's been renovated and at the back is a dress shop, and a hairdressers.

  1. How lovely to see those Penny farthings! I think that they would be very difficult to ride!

    1. I'm sure they would be hard to ride in more ways than one.

  2. Hello,

    This is quite incredible!

We had no idea that such a race existed. Indeed we are totally amazed that there are so many penny farthing bicycles and riders left to make a race at all. What a wonderful sight this must make and how skilful these riders must be.

Well, one learns something new every day!

There are children's bikes but I don't think they race, but have seen photos of such.

  3. It would be really fun to see someone riding those old bikes. I've only seen them in museums.

  4. The race looks good fun. I remember seeing some people riding penny farthing bicycles dressing in Victorian outfits, and I wondered how the women managed wearing long skirts.

    1. That's interesting in long skirts, don't know how they did that.
There are women who wear period costumes on the day of the race, it's interesting to see.

  5. Not another competitor in sight at the finish. He is quite a clear winner.

  6. The winner must be really fast. I can'at even imagine being able to stay upright on that cycle!

    1. Fast for a penny farthing. I don't know how they sit on the seat without falling off, I expect they get used to it, and it's balance.

    1. Beats me how they ride, but they of course do...they must practice for hours.

  11. I find the penny farthing bike fascinating don't know if I would be able to ride one, as I have a fear of heights and being high on a bike is something of my nightmares.

    1. You would be high up Jo-Anne, and I guess you may never ride one.

  12. I would not like to be one riding on a bike like that, but it would be fun to watch. Your photos are gorgeous once again, Janice, thank you so much for sharing.

    1. You are welcome.
I won't attempt to ride one as I don't have one, or know anyone personally that does.

  13. Thank God bicycle makers came to their senses. The Bloody thing must have been the most uncomfortable contraption ever built to ride. I wonder where the person we doubled on an ordinary bike perched???
Wonderful unspoilt little village, just so quaint and clean looking. A great credit to Tasmanians or is that Tasweegians???
God help you down there if you ever get labelled "Jackie-Lambians" (Sorry, couldn't help myself - ha ha)
    Cheers

    1. Well what fun we have or have had on bikes of today and before that even. I don't know if they doubled back in those days...but I do recall seeing two people on a penny-farthing.
It's a lovely village which is kept as it was, well they have tried to, but on the outskirts of the village there are of course new and newer houses.
      :)

    1. Yes it does have sculpture there of a penny farthing. It's certainly different to see them.

  15. We must have passed each other at the Penny Farthing Races and not seen each other. Pity as it would have been nice to meet you. Maybe sometime in the future.
