Carnarvon, Western Australia.

Carnarvon in Western Australia the next place we stayed on our travels this year.

The town was founded in 1883, initially as a port and supply centre for the surrounding region, and is the administrative centre for the Shire of Carnarvon. The town site was officially gazetted on 4 June 1891, named after Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon.

Bananas are grown in the area known as Cavendish.  Tomatoes, grapefuit, mangoes and table grapes.
Cattle, goats, sheep and wool.

There is also mining, fishing and tourism.

During the 1960s, NASA set up a tracking station nearby to support the Gemini and Apollo space programs. The tracking station was closed in the mid-1970s. Only the foundations of the historical site remain.

    1. Yes, they are good. I wondered how long it has taken them to be like that.

    1. We didn't see any evidence of veggies or fruit being grown, must be in another direction to where we were.

  5. The jetty looks very long so the train seems like a good idea.

  6. Obviously a windy day from the trees in the last photo where maybe a mower
could be put to good use.
The "Out door Museum" looks like it could do with a bit of a makeover.
That "little toy looking engine" - surely it wasn't used to pull produce and freight etc. to the waiting freighters or is this just a train to take tourists to the end of the jetty??
Interesting report - I actually thought Carnarvon was a place on the "up and up".
Thank God it rained here in Brisbane last night - got rid of the humidity.
Looks like it has set in for today with the on and off stuff.
    Cheers

    1. Hot breeze Colin from my memory.
Carnarvon is not the best looking place, though it's clean and tidy.
I thought the same about the little museum, it needs a good tidy up, and of course with the sea so close there is bound to be rust.
Well that's good it rained. A beautiful day after the rain here.
The Yacht is going ok, and the cricket - well the West Indies are getting thrashed at the moment..

  7. Your photos are gorgeous, Margaret! Thank you so much for sharing them. I had a great Christmas, a lovely turkey dinner with all the trimmings at my friend's place. I thoroughly enjoyed the company and the meal. :)

Wonderful to hear you had a good Christmas, makes it so much better with company. If I hear of someone as in family or friend that will be alone for Christmas dinner, they come to our house for a meal.

  8. I'm always appreciative of my lifestyle now when I think back to what life must have been like for the early settlers.

  9. Margaret, I so enjoy my armchair travels through Australia with you as guide. We have friends nearby who just visited Australia, and we're looking forward to getting together with them to hear about it. They had a fabulous time.

  13. A little train! I love little trains :)
I also love that photo 4th from the bottom with the old pilings in the sand. That's frameable.
Carnarvon looks like quite a peaceful place. I didn't know they grew bananas there, I thought all bananas were grown in QLD and northern NSW.

Ah, well, we learn each something new.
Thanks re photo. I never looked at the 4th photos as being like that, though I often see it with other peoples photos.
