The town was founded in 1883, initially as a port and supply centre for the surrounding region, and is the administrative centre for the Shire of Carnarvon. The town site was officially gazetted on 4 June 1891, named after Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon.
Bananas are grown in the area known as Cavendish. Tomatoes, grapefuit, mangoes and table grapes.
Cattle, goats, sheep and wool.
There is also mining, fishing and tourism.
During the 1960s, NASA set up a tracking station nearby to support the Gemini and Apollo space programs. The tracking station was closed in the mid-1970s. Only the foundations of the historical site remain.

That "little toy looking engine" - surely it wasn't used to pull produce and freight etc. to the waiting freighters or is this just a train to take tourists to the end of the jetty??
Interesting report - I actually thought Carnarvon was a place on the "up and up".
Thank God it rained here in Brisbane last night - got rid of the humidity.

I thought the same about the little museum, it needs a good tidy up, and of course with the sea so close there is bound to be rust.

The Yacht is going ok, and the cricket - well the West Indies are getting thrashed at the moment..

I'm always appreciative of my lifestyle now when I think back to what life must have been like for the early settlers.

Carnarvon looks like quite a peaceful place. I didn't know they grew bananas there, I thought all bananas were grown in QLD and northern NSW.
Seemed to be peaceful and not much happening when we were there.
