When the Fitzroy River is in full flood during the wet season (summer) it covers the whole national park. Those floods rise over 16 metres up the gorge walls and the continuous rise and fall of the water has left the bottom of the walls bleached white, an intriguing sight which makes Geikie Gorge very popular with photographers.
The rock is limestone.
I've never heard of the place so thanks for the education. Sounds like the tour would be most interesting.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't surprise me you haven't heard of it. Yes, it's a nice ride up the river...
DeleteA sixteen meter rise is quite dramatic. So many fascinating places in Australia!
ReplyDeleteYes a big swell or flood. Many marvellous places in this world...
Deleteit is an amazing river and so dangerous
ReplyDeleteCan be if there are crocodiles about...
DeleteDramatic and so very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you. And some envious thoughts.
You are welcome :). Nice to see places we might not see in our homeland through someone else's eyes.
DeleteI don't think I could do it, but how wonderful it would be to see the top end in the wet season.
ReplyDeleteNow that would be totally something. We both would like to experience that, but most likely won't. No eaves on the roofs, rains too hard.
DeleteAnd exceedingly dangerous in flood.
ReplyDeleteColin
I thought I forgot something - also has none too friendly fresh water
Deletecrocodiles in the river.
Colin
That very true Colin about the freshwater crocks...wouldn't want to be on Shank's Pony in a hurry to get out of there!
DeleteYep - Shanks and rider would be dead meat pretty swiftly, that's for sure.
DeleteThen there is the delightful "whip ray" to add to the perils of that river.
I noted that on the website that warnings abound on the "nasties" in the river.
Cheers
Colin
I found this astonishing during our time in Katherine Gorge - the level of the flood waters were reported to rise to the very top of the cliffs. It was difficult to imagine the extreme quantities of water to do so.
ReplyDeleteLovely up that Gorge, we did it several years ago. Very hard to imagine how quickly and how high the water rises in the wet some years.....way over the top of the Katherine Bridge too...floods the houses.
DeleteI no longer need to travel, just keep up with my blog reading I never been to WA but I will follow your journey with interest.
ReplyDeleteThey do have big floods.
Merle..............
Thanks :)
DeleteYes, many places in our country have huge floods and isolation when it happens.
That would be so dramatic to see as a contrast. Loving being along with you on your holiday!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Be good to see the rain and floods...there are markings at the Gorge with the years written on that flooded.
DeleteBloody wonderful
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty with the reflections..
DeleteLovely reflections in your first photo!
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteOh yeah, those are most certainly some sights well worth seeing.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly are.
DeleteYou have been traveling some amazing and beautiful places! Love reading of your travels and seeing the photos.
ReplyDeleteDifferent scenery, different town...
DeleteStunning! We certainly have some awesomely beautiful places in this country of ours. Thanks for sharing so much of it with us. :)
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome. So different on our journey is the scenery to the East Coast :)
DeleteI am trying to imagine that 16 meters flood, amazing to witness wild life migrate and come back every year.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to imagine such high floods. I would have to see it to believe it.
DeleteGeikie Gorge is one of my most favourite places that I have visited. I even bought a print of a painting of the gorge and it hangs in our stair well.
ReplyDeleteDid you buy a painting. I bet it's awesome...
