The Clock, Launceston, Tasmania

Whilst in the city during Jury duty I was able to take a few photos with my phone of the Town Clock, Macquarie House built 1830 in the Civic Square, plus a vehicle on the roof of a verandah in one of the main streets.

The Launceston City clock is over a hundred years old with the Post Office at the base of it.  It's always been well maintained and chimes throughout the night on the hour.  I remember when doing my training and living in the Nurses home I along with most of the Nurses would hear the clock chime during the night, and of course on our way on duty, it struck 6 times which gave us time to get to the hospital and be on time.

Recently there were complaints from mostly visitors who stay in the motels/hotels saying the clock was too noisy.  They didn't win, the clock still chimes and strikes.  It never woke me up.

  1. Is it fall or spring in Tanzania, looks like changing color but lots of sun.

  2. It's a very elegant clock tower Margaret. And I'm loving the VW on the roof! Chiming clocks should never be silenced in my humble opinion.

  3. It is a lovely clock tower - visitors should use their initiative and wear earplugs rather than make stupid complaints

    1. I think the clock came from England all those years ago...I agree Rosemary, ear plugs is the answer for the tourists who complain....

  4. I love the story about the clock and I'm glad they did not give in to visitors and silence it! The VW van on the roof is very attention-getting, which is I suppose what they had in mind.

  6. What the Bloody hell!
Aren't town / city hall clocks supposed to chime / toll?
Bugger the whinging bloody tourists - these tourist
types would whinge about anything. A word of advice
don't ever go on an extended tour with a group - there
will be always one or two constant whingers.

Did only a one week tour and
how I didn't murder a bloody male creature and a constantly
couple who drove the tour guide mad, is one of the mysteries
of life. A tropics area - the male from London complained of the
heat and the couple from Houston, TX - God forbid, the local
    inhabitants!!!
Locals adapt to noises. The trains passing my place drove
me up the wall initially - now I don't hear them unless intentionally.
The locals of Launceston who are in noise range could even depend
on the clock for the time.
I am glad the clock won.
    Cheers
    Colin
(PS: I noticed the very clean streets)

    2. Never been on a tour with others. From what I've heard there is always one person who is a problem.
Yes, locals do adapt...I used to live next to a main road with trams years ago when a child, I never heard the trams..

  7. I wonder if tourists complain about the noise from Big Ben striking. Love the Kombi on the roof. I remember a pub there which had a tram or train carriage inside to in.

  9. That clock tower is so beautiful, especially framed as you did, with the trees some in fall color. The van with the surfboard on the roof is just classic!

  16. I am a new visitor to your blog. I've seen your last entry and I say , I agree that the clock is still playing , it is a sign of identity of this city ... who are a series of individuals who stay several days, to silence him .
