The Punchbowl, Launceston, Tasmania.

The Punchbowl Reserve is a good place to have a picnic or a walk around the pond, have a game of cricket in the summer or football in winter, or just run around.  There is a playground for children as well.

The Turbo Chook or Tasmanian Native Hens are good swimmers' fast runners with strong legs therefore some people call them 'turbo chooks'. The chooks can run up to 50km hour are plentiful near marshes, rivers and so on. The Native Hen is protected, and they don't fly.

These photos were taken recently in autumn.

The photo of the Native Hen below was taken a few years ago with my Canon camera...you can see the difference in quality to the phone.

  1. The hen's legs look out of proportion to the body and even more to the head. The hen in the second photo looks like it is almost goose stepping.

    1. Totally agree - a very smart goose stepper!
I think Adolph, El Duce and Stalin would be delighted.
Certainly many of them in one photo.
Oh yes and please stop sending your freezing weather up here.
      It is freezing this morning.
I am off to Terrigal beach to see if anyone is in the surf.
      Yesterday the beach was deserted.
      Cheers

    2. They do indeed walk like that Hels. They can run up to 50km an hour, so fast for a bird with legs like that!

  4. The first Tasmanian Native Hen we encountered was spotted in a field while we were driving. We pulled over to the side of the road to get a better look and take a picture, not knowing that we would see several every day!

    1. I'm pleased you got a picture of them, the hens seem to be in many places yet you can travel around Tasmania and not see one...luck of the draw.

    1. Just a small stream and it is lovely, you sit there in the car park or near the barbecue area and can hear the water, lovely.

  8. The creek is lovely.
The Native Hens would be outrun anything, which is handy if they can't fly.

    1. They do a good job with their running, yet I've never seen one doing so, just strutting along. It's a rather small creek, Andrew yet it sounds good and looks nice when there is plenty of water running.

    1. The hen is certainly not like normal hens as we know them, very different in shape, yet similar.

  11. Beautiful photo of the moorhen, as we call it here.
    We see it regularly here.
I think the stream is very beautiful.
I wish you a beautiful Wednesday.

  12. Looks a bit like our Coot. The phone picture is actually fine. Sometimes being able to easily grab an interesting shot can make absolute lens quality a bit less important. 50 KPH? Wow!

    1. Yes, similar but not the same, Bill.
We always have our phones with us, well most of us do and it's so easy to grab it and take a photo whereas if you had to get the camera, set it the bird would be gone, especially in my case .

    1. Oh yes it sure is Giorgio. Several small walks can be had there but mostly houses built around that area now. We are so privileged to have such a nice nature reserve so close to the city and home.

  17. I don't think I have heard of the Turbo chook before. I like your header picture, I bought a couple of plants years ago with similar leaves, thinking to start a hedge, but they just didn't grow, six months after planting they began to die. The soil here is THAT bad. I planted the succulent jades instead.

    1. Thanks re header, growing in the garden up the back, amazing colour this time of year, can't recall what it's called either. It doesn't grow fast but would make a pretty hedge.
      The jades would look nice.

    1. Well let's hope you do, Liam but first of all may it be Tasmania. Probably a slip of the finger there with the name. No, they are not my family. That native hen (turbo chook) the second one is strutting about or was..lol
