Whim Creek, WA

Whim Creek is a small town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Originally a post office known as "Whim Well", Whim Creek is on the North West Coastal Highway midway between Karratha and Port Hedland.

We passed by this Hotel several years ago without calling, this time we did call.  Apparently the Hotel had been closed for a few years and reopened after renovations this year.  We were lucky.
We treated ourselves to lunch which was excellent, made so much more enjoyable because there was A/C.

The front is still being renovated.
Below the side of the Hotel.

Not sure why that large tyre is there.

That's us/ours.  Was very hot, but cooler weather to come.
This was the first day/night without A/C for some time.

The truck was over the way from us.  It has two miners houses on it's trailers.

The beginning of the sunset.

The sunset.

The end of the sunset.

  1. The miner's houses look strictly utilitarian. Nothing flash about them. Love that sky - and your gif with Santa and the polar bear cubs is enchanting. Thank you.

  2. Early off the mark today Margaret?????
Just checked weather conditions in Tasmania to see if your were in the
dark - all looks normal ha ha.
The Pub looks great for way out there - nutritious looking meal and good to see the driver on "squash". Good boy, "Shanks Bevan". I bet the A/C was VERY welcome.
I think the bulldozer tyre is great as an attraction. Different.
Those "truck trains" are huge. Just thank that the roads are now sealed - can you imagine the dust of years ago when one of these were encountered!!!
    Great informative report. Much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Colin

    1. Curiosity got the better of me, Margaret, re: the re-opening of this hotel and the improvements. So out with my WA map! I reckon the owner/s have done their homework well - excellent location on the "Nomad" route and between the Pilbara and Hamersley mining areas.
The Whim Creek Hotel I reckon will be a publican's "gold mine".
      Good luck to them.

    2. Those trains are large but you get used to them. They go at a decent speed and don't hold up the traffic like they used to.

Not sure if the Pub is a gold mine, it was doing ok the day/night we were there.
Have no idea what the rooms are like but will look on the internet.
Very dusty there in the car park and the area we were parked in to sleep..
      Posted earlier this time...

  6. Good to see a small town thriving and what a great place to see sunsets. The burger looks just like we would be served at our local pub. I have requisites when travelling, wi fi and air con.

    1. Wi-fi is ok if you can get it..not many places offered it where we went. Some places no phone let alone wi-fi.
Yes, the burger is similar to what we get here too.
Whim Creek is only a hotel, that's about all that's there..

  7. Those burgers are huge! I'd have to de-construct one and eat the separate components. There's no way I could get my mouth around that.
    The Hotel looks very nice.
Love the sunset. Always nice to see gold tinged clouds.

    1. The tyre was off the highway, there was a road into Whim Creek Hotel and that's where the tyre was.

    1. Good one, that's an old joke :)
Actually there is a Creek near Whim Creek which comes from the Indian Ocean, but due to drought there is no water in it expect for the wet season.
