Buildings in Rockhampton, Queensland.

It was a Sunday when we took the drive into the city to take some photos, less traffic!
The photo below is of the Supreme Court House of Rockhampton which was built in 1950 - 1955.

The Post Office built in 1892 - 1896.

The large tree in the middle of the road adds as shelter in the heat of the day in Northern Queensland.
The below photos are of a the main st. in Rockhampton and most towns and some cities have this shade for the shoppers and their cars.

  1. The architecture is quite regal.
    Main Street looks inviting.
    Thanks for sharing.
    Have a great one.

  2. don't you hate when the government architecture turns modernistic? Reminds me of the jutting monoliths in the new federal building in my home town. What were they thinking. Keep the classics in our government buildings. Sigh. (I know, I'm a whiner.)

    1. No not a whiner, you just saying. I prefer the older buildings sometimes the modern and older compliment each other but not often.

    1. A lot of so called modern buildings there too, but I prefer to photograph the older ones if they are nicer in my opinion.

  5. I do like the older buildings. And shade.
Sadly trees are becoming less and less common in parking areas here. Which I regret.

    1. Oh gosh, that's a pity regarding the trees in parking areas in your city.
We don't have any here where we park either but the climate also doesn't lend to such large shade trees in our city. We do have large trees in parks though.

  6. The covered sidewalks remind me of the way our shopping malls were built in the early 1950's. I can well imagine that the shade helps a lot! I do enjoy your posts showing everyday architecture there.

    1. Thanks re posts and architecture. I try to take photos of some architecture if I can but not always possible. Usually in the northern area of Australia the gutters in the streets are deep to help take away the tropical rains.

  9. It's an interesting old town.

The Talbot Estate an affordable housing estate for senior citizens or pensioners in Rockhampton was built and named in honour of a much-revered Rocky doctor...a Dr. Talbot. The moneys raised to build the estate was from locally organised fund-raising events...nothing from the governments. Talbot Estate that has 77 residences and houses 150 people is still self-funding to this day.

When I was a kid Mum and Nana always had high praise for Dr. Talbot, who had been the family doctor. They always talked dearly of him. He brought both my late brother and I into this world.

From all accounts, Dr. Talbot was a fine man and doctor. I often wonder if doctors today are revered in the way the family doctors of long ago were.

    1. That's interesting news about the housing estate. I expect you might find one or two Dr.'s like Dr. Talbot these days.

  10. I like tree-lined streets, as well as giving shade, they look more friendly somehow.
