Off to Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

Before we continue the photos of our holiday last year a couple of photos taken last evening by Peter Sayers near Devonport, Tasmania.
Photos with the smoke haze at sunset.

They are wonderful.

The largest fire is spread across 7,000 hectares in a remote area of what is known as the Great Western Tiers in the north of this island.

To continue the Holiday 2015
Off to visit our niece in Kalgoolie, Western Australia.
Remembering that this area is known for mining.  Previous post on Kalgoorlie is [ here ]
From Merridin to Kalgoorlie we went through a town called Southern Cross, then Coolgardie, Western Australia.

The Hotel at Southern Cross, no doubt is was really something in it's day.

Southern Cross the town.

The RSL Coolgardie.  (Return Serviceman's League)

Kalgoorlie, a view.

The town of Kalgoorlie.

A brothel that is still used but it's a museum these days.

Hooking onto the caravan on our way east.

  1. Fantastic photos of the smoke haze at sunset. It must have been lots of fun holiday and camping with a caravan.

  6. Wow--- Peter's smokey images are beyond amazing. Too bad about the fires, though. Your shots of the town are interesting. In our little towns there are a few buildings which were originally brothels---built specifically for that purpose--- from our wild and wooly logging days.

  7. Dear Margaret - Peter Sayers images are fantastic - they remind me of designs seen on Art Deco pottery and posters.

    1. Very different buildings are those Linda. I think the 'pink' building still is a working brothel but also a museum.

  10. Kalgoorlie - oh boy what a place. An "ACTIVE" museum - the imagination boggles with the hmmmmmmmmmm! - no I best be good.

That for a country town is a huge hotel at Southern Cross.
Maybe when built it had a lot of boarders staying there with the
building of the water pipe lines and the railway???
    Cheers

    1. My God Margaret - those fires in the NW of Tasmania are frightening to read about on the Web and to see on the news.
51 still out of control is bloody scary.
I was certainly NOT AMUSED to read how the fire in the Black River region was started. I hope the "arm of the law" is enforced to the maximum degree.

    2. The Southern Cross Hotel would I'm sure had miners, water pipe line and railway men staying there years ago. There is not much else in that town these days.

Fires are still going strong, hopefully it might rain!
Launceston and surrounding areas as with smoke, not good.
The majority of the fires were started by lightening several days ago, but those two young ones that started them need to be dealt with severely.

Today in Hobart, in the early hours of the morning a 15 year old was driving a stolen vehicle, caused an accident and killed a pregnant mum who was 32 weeks, the boy ran from the accident and he had two passengers aged 12 and 15. Where were the parents!!!!
      Anyway, the baby was saved.

    3. Yes that Hobart news was on the morning TV news - that kid won't be getting off lightly that is for sure.
      Parents - yes I wonder????????????

  14. Sadly it appears that the reasonable rain we have just received missed Tasmania almost completely. While the sunset photos are brilliant, better we don't have the fires.

So from Kalgoorlie you loaded your car and van onto the Indian Pacific and had a leisurely trip home?

We continued on the road towards home :) no getting on the train, too much lovely scenery to see and take our time over.

  19. We are hearing about the Tassie fires over in the mainland. Not good, and I'm presuming this rain didn't get to you over there? Amazing photos from Peter. Smoke does make for very eerie photos.

  20. The Tassie bushfires are on the news here in Brisbane.
Just saw a map of the situation - the whole of the north
and west of the state seem to be in flames and other
states have dispatched fire crews to assist.
I sure hope that rain comes and comes quickly.

  24. So awful about the fires. It is such a devastating aspect to life in summer. I hope they are brought under control soon.

Your photos are amazing through the smoke haze. A great post on Kalgoorlie too - such a great town that still retains it's goldmining heritage. It has so much character.

I'm delighted by the pink museum.
When I was little I didn't know about Coolgardie and when people spoke of it, I thought they meant Kalgoorlie but didn't know how to pronounce it.
