Geikie Gorge, Fitzroy Crossing WA

Lovely picturesque Gorge. One can take a guided tour for a reasonable price. The tour takes 1 and 1/2 hours.
When the Fitzroy River is in full flood during the wet season (summer) it covers the whole national park. Those floods rise over 16 metres up the gorge walls and the continuous rise and fall of the water has left the bottom of the walls bleached white, an intriguing sight which makes Geikie Gorge very popular with photographers.
The rock is limestone.

  1. I've never heard of the place so thanks for the education. Sounds like the tour would be most interesting.

  5. I don't think I could do it, but how wonderful it would be to see the top end in the wet season.

    1. Now that would be totally something. We both would like to experience that, but most likely won't. No eaves on the roofs, rains too hard.

  6. And exceedingly dangerous in flood.

    2. That very true Colin about the freshwater crocks...wouldn't want to be on Shank's Pony in a hurry to get out of there!

    3. Yep - Shanks and rider would be dead meat pretty swiftly, that's for sure.
Then there is the delightful "whip ray" to add to the perils of that river.
I noted that on the website that warnings abound on the "nasties" in the river.
      Cheers

  7. I found this astonishing during our time in Katherine Gorge - the level of the flood waters were reported to rise to the very top of the cliffs. It was difficult to imagine the extreme quantities of water to do so.

    1. Lovely up that Gorge, we did it several years ago. Very hard to imagine how quickly and how high the water rises in the wet some years.....way over the top of the Katherine Bridge too...floods the houses.

Yes, many places in our country have huge floods and isolation when it happens.

    1. It's hard to imagine such high floods. I would have to see it to believe it.

  15. Geikie Gorge is one of my most favourite places that I have visited. I even bought a print of a painting of the gorge and it hangs in our stair well.
