Elephant Pass, Tasmania

The Pass must be shaped like an Elephant....it has hairpin bends and is hilly. At times when looking down the side of the road one can see the top of the tall trees well below the road.
The terrain, trees and more trees.
There is a Restaurant about halfway which proves to be popular for light meals, known for their delicious pancakes.

Photos below are part of the highway towards the end of the Pass, and after a few more hairpin bends it's WOW!, you can see the sea.  East Coast of Tasmania.
If looking on the map below you can see Bicheno, and that was where we were headed.

Fog, mist, rain.

Map of Tasmania (old one) which I scanned...it can be enlarged if wished to.

  1. The map helped me see where you are. I know where Tasmania is but none of the details of the island and it is interesting to see what a large part is parks and wild lands. Beautiful mist on the road in your photos.

    1. A good part of Tasmania is locked up, as is said. In some areas if you were to cut a tree down there would be trouble with the "Greens' a political party here in Australia. A lot of our land is World Heritage and old growth forests, such large trees.

  2. We have a very similar road pretty close to our home, descending down to sea level. But in wintry weather with ice, it's sometimes a no go area. A problem I'm guessing that you don't have. I love misty scenes like that.

    1. I do believe they might have a bit of snow some years on that pass. Some areas of Tasmania have frosts, and black ice right in winter but that's about it.

    1. Oh do you. We don't have fog much at all, just once in awhile in autumn and winter...Our island is deceiving as to how big it is...looks small on the world map or at the bottom on the big island.

    1. Oh dear Mildred....all our roads have curves here in Tasmania, but only a few are as windy as the Elephant Pass. I have known tourist to visit the island and get car sick, where as we locals are used to it, well some of us are.
I have been going to put a map on my blog for ages but kept forgetting.

  7. Very atmospheric photos. I once followed a daily photo blog by someone in Bicheno and the link is still on my blog but the site has been taken over. What a pity. I wonder what happened.

  8. Dicey driving conditions on such narrow roads.
In which direction are you travelling? Ex: Launceston.
    Cheers

    1. A lot of our roads are narrow like that one in the photo. Was travelling from Launceston to Bicheno.

  9. I could not be a passenger if driving a road like that, I would be sick. We have many such roads around these parts, but again, I can't drive them, but not be a passenger.
